Meet Charmaine Gurule’ | Oil Painter

We had the good fortune of connecting with Charmaine Gurule’ and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Charmaine, let’s start by talking about what inspires you?
I am inspired by Ideas – great ideas, noble ideas, essentially the ideas that insincerity tries to suppress. What I mean by insincerity is all the forces that try to cloak or bend the truth, including any intention that suffocates beauty, trust, love, innocence, freedom, and or self actualization. Essentially, all the things which are God given gifts.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I love art. I love other people’s art. I love to paint all day, everyday. I love to give paintings away as gifts. There isn’t a part of the process that I don’t enjoy ( except looking back on my previous works ).
The thing that sets me apart from other’s ( that I can see ) is the direction of my end game. While I can relate with many artists who express they are most carefree immersed in their work, I still feel a weight of responsibility. For me, art is a legacy from one generation to the next. Essentially, how to encapsulate noble ideas, uplift, an be a blessing with this God given drive is a hug preoccupation. This fixation ends up dictating most of my compositions and the reason why I must be like Frank Sinatra and “do it my way”. At the end of the day, I am part of the club that doesn’t paint for money – even though I need money.
I have been in art sales, made frames from scratch, repaired art, hung in galleries, participated in shows and won awards. I would say it was fairly easy, Actually, the fear of failing at all the external responsibilities that a modern person must take on was the tedious, unhappy and hard part about pursuing an art career. Which leads me back to what inspires me. The ideas that allow people to pursuit their happiness, their innocent endeavors, and flourish. healthily are evaporating. I, therefore, have opened a call to all artists and creatives to join me in Keeping the Brushfires of Freedom Alive Through Art. There is not a more delightful and long lasting way to get a point across.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Since I live up in the mountains, out on the outskirts, we are talking about a retreat kind of “best time ever”. In every direction there is nature to breath in; plenty of hiking; rustic meals; long, thoughtful conversations; humble down to earth people and no formal itinerary. This is a time to get a book read or start a painting. Bring your dog or your pet rooster – it’s all good.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Please let me shoutout to our precious Veterans who are the first to be sacrificed for the promise; the noble idea, that We the People of the United States have established Justice and secured the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity -their Service truly humbles me.
