We had the good fortune of connecting with Chelsea Bytes and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Chelsea, other than deciding to work for yourself, what was the single most important decision you made that contributed to your success?
I wanted ChelseaBytes to encompass a type of person that was lacking visibility online; a person who battles what a “geek” or “nerd” should look like. I tackled this by understanding that every aspect of who I am could be used to paint a picture of what that is. I didn’t need to just share bits and pieces and stick to a theme! I decided to share all of me. I took a variety approach to ChelseaBytes because it not only increased my creative options, but my business opportunities as well. I think if I had chosen to stick to one part of me, I would have choked any chances of branching out and put myself in a box. Many people online say that variety content will hurt your growth, but I can absolutely say the opposite has happened.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
To give more insight on what I do, I’m a computer scientist turned content creator who likes to play videogames and build computers to give away. I’d like to take more artistic liberties with my pcs so people can appreciate computers for the work of art they are. Like every job, you build a well of knowledge as you gain experience. I am very lucky to have a creative outlet where what I learned is very visible in the work I do. I get better with my cable management, part choice, and designs as I keep putting more pcs together. I am the most proud of my community that I’ve built over the years, because without them I’d have absolutely no fun. I’m SO thankful for my drive and flexibility, because I believe it took us beyond what I ever expected in my career. Every skill I gain gets me closer to my goal, which is to challenge the ideas of what people think I should be as well as introduce others to what I love every day (which is building computers if that’s not obvious). It definitely isn’t easy and takes a LOT of patience, but I reap the benefits as I keep pushing forward. Hopefully after all this time, ChelseaBytes encourages others to not be afraid to experiment with tech and express themselves fully.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I could show my bestie around Austin, first thing we’d do is sit down at Lin Qi. When I say it is one of the BEST Asian kitchens in the city, I am dead serious. You have to get the salt & pepper fish or you’ll miss out on the whole experience. Then we’ll hang out at Valhalla and play board games and order drinks for a few hours. If you want to people watch or laze at a mall: The Domain is a great spot. For the outdoorsy types: go kayaking on Lady Bird Lake. and movies? Alamo Drafthouse. That should cover a good day.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
ALL of my success is a big thanks to my manager and husband: Mango. He keeps me sane while we try to figure out our next move. I also wouldn’t be who I am without the amazing streamers I’ve surrounded myself with, like CupAhNoodle, Techniq, StoryModeBae, BettyNixx, DataDave, and many more. I am so happy to have found a home with the noir network, a group for black women run by xmiramira, who is a true icon and a bastion of knowledge. The amazing teams at G2, Amazon, and DTS have also allowed me to have unique and unforgettable experiences. They’ve also helped me get to work with amazing and natural talents like my favorite co-host ActionJaxon(Don’t tell him I said that).
