We had the good fortune of connecting with Chelsea Foglio and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Chelsea, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I believe the thought process behind starting my own business really can be simplified into one word: independence. The idea of being my own boss has been a pipe dream of mine that I’ve always been chasing after. I got a taste for this professional independence during the handful of times that I have done freelance work while doing makeup. En route to the job locations, I remember being in my car and speaking out loud/ singing to myself, unable to contain the immense amount of happiness I felt in that moment. This exact moment was a perfect representation to me of what the freedom enabled by independence feels like. And since then, I have only been able to feel that form of happiness when I work for myself.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Creativity has always been my first language. Almost to a fault, unsolicited ideas always pouring out of my mouth to anyone that would listen. From school projects to a face full of makeup, I’ve always had a medium that I was able to express these ideas through. Luckily enough, I had a regular job within the makeup industry for close to ten years that fostered creativity on the regular. When my chapter with makeup artistry closed, I found myself in a new career within corporate America. Sitting in front of a computer from 9-5 daily, made me realize very quickly that a keyboard was not the creative outlet I was used to. So upon putting the makeup brush down, I started picking up some string in my free time and began my macrame journey. Allowing space in my life for creativity to be expressed regularly has fundamentally inspired balance. Living within this lesson of balance has promoted much more happiness and ultimately has brought me to find the juxtaposition that is The Boho Disco. Combining the laid back boho vibes of macrame with a dazzling disco spin is my expression of this balance that I have found. This macrame business has been the outlet that I needed and now can’t get enough of! I cannot wait to see what tomorrow brings for this brand and it’s groovy state of mind!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I have lived in Arizona my whole life and there are so many interesting places to check out for fun! Northern Arizona is filled with gems of excitement. I personally enjoy the Jerome and Sedona area for just the scenic views alone. The San Tan Mountain Regional Park has great hiking trails with beautiful city and desert views! The Van Buren always has some good shows going on in Downtown Phoenix. Zuzu at The Valley Ho in Scottsdale is a great restaurant especially for their dessert menu! There’s honestly too many to count!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There has been multiple people that have had a part in the success of this small business. To start, I want to shoutout an individual for encouraging me / helping me along the way. This person is my boyfriend’s mom, Julie. She has been one of my biggest motivators in this whole experience of starting my own small business on Etsy. She has her own successful Etsy business called Promise Pottery and has been a prime example of how you can take your passion and turn it into professional freedom! I can’t express how thankful I am to you, Julie! Also, to my boyfriend Aaron for helping me anytime I ask! You’re the best, babe! And finally, to everyone that has believed in me and you know who you are, I just want to say thank you to you all as well. I wouldn’t be here without your support!
