We had the good fortune of connecting with Chelsea Nye and Melissa Shanahan of Amy Rose Photography and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Chelsea and Melissa, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
After working together for a few years, we were in pursuit of developing new and exciting opportunities outside of operating inside an in-house studio. Sharing the same ethics and values around output quality, artistic discipline, and having complimenting personalities, we drew up a business plan and went for it!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?

We are freelance commercial photographers specializing in Interior, Home Decor, and Lifestyle. We enjoy shooting in-studio or on location and are best known for blending various lighting techniques. Using strobes, natural light, or a combination of both allows us to develop the desired lighting scheme for each image created.

One of the greatest gifts we value in our craft is the relationship and experience with the client. We collaborate on a concept they envision and take that idea to create tangible art.

After years in corporate communication, Melissa left to chase a more fulfilling creative dream in photography. Chelsea picked up her first camera as a kid and started her professional career at a local portrait studio at 16. Our backgrounds couldn’t be more different, but we’re absolutely in sync in our dedication to creating impactful and—we’ll say it—kick-ass imagery.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.

First, we find a cute little oyster bar in Boston by the Seaport and catch up over noshes. Then we may stop by a creative event, like an art exhibition, museum, or network meet-up where we connect with other artists. Then, of course, the night would have to end with dancing which could be (and not limited to) the street, restaurant, club, or hotel room. We’d then take a few days to collaborate on a spontaneous project and execute it (we hook up our friends.) Finally, we’d spend our final days at the beach, whether it’s a relaxing, tranquil retreat in Wellfleet or a little more animated like at Hampton Beach (since we’re not hopping on a plane.)

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?

We attribute our success, not only to each other, but to our close knit creative community and networks. The strong relationships built with other creative teams have been crucial due to the trust and support received. As a result, we are honored to be able to create opportunities and support them as well.
