We had the good fortune of connecting with Alexis Lopez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alexis, is there a quote or affirmation that’s meaningful to you?
Keep it simple stupid. This is one of the quotes I keep in mind while going through my creative process in any stage. I not only want to avoid my pieces from becoming too over complicated for the customers to wear but also to be able to streamline the work to keep my time spent on each piece to a minimum and be able to pass savings onto the buyers. I find it is a quote that works in every aspect of life!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I love to work with metal. I have always been an artist for as long as I can remember but there is something special about working with this raw material and my hands! I spent a lot of time in the Southwest growing up and the jewelry has always been something to fascinate and inspire me, including the new line I am developing for my own jewelry. It took many failures to get where I am today. Many jobs where I wasn’t growing or where I felt like I was being held back from my goals and dreams, but eventually I found the right fit at AllTribes where my coworkers were willing and eager to push my abilities and a boss that was willing to take the chance with me and has the patience to allow me to make mistakes and try again. I think the biggest lesson I have had to learn is that success doesn’t always come right away. You have to try and fail at many things to understand what your true passions are and what you are really willing to sacrifice for. I get excited to go to work and then come home and work on my own designs. I used to think success as an artist was making big bucks creating art and for some that is true, but for me, success is just being able to pay my bills and being able to work more for myself and knowing people out there think my work is beautiful and that they appreciate and want to support me so that I can keep on doing it. What I want for people to know about my own brand Heavy Metal Designs is that every piece I create is made with love and craftsmanship. I have developed every aspect of this upcoming line and I want the person receiving my jewelry to love it as much as I love making it for many generations. I also want to be an inspiration for other creative types that when you really love doing something, it will show and you will grow step by step and succeed!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
When people think about Arizona, they think about a really hot desert and during certain times of the year, that is true, but there is so much more to it than that. There is a rich history and cultural diversity unlike so many places. I would have friends visit me in the spring which is my favorite time of year out here, where the weather is beautiful and the cacti are in full bloom and you can feel the desert come alive. We would go on a hike at one of the many spots out here and hit up a ghost town or maybe go to a spring training game followed with drinks at some of the many local breweries. If a good show is in town maybe a concert at Valley Bar or the Crescent Ball Room. There would definitely be a drive up to Sedona, Jerome or Flagstaff to see the forests and natural red rocks and probably a visit to the Grand Canyon as well! Lastly no visit is complete without a stop for some pizza at Pizzeria Bianco and tacos at Taco Huicho!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
All Tribes Southwest jewelry and decor. They took me in, treated me with respect and have allowed me to grow and be inspired in my silversmithing. Thank you!
