We had the good fortune of connecting with David Layman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi David, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
After many years as a club professional, I decided I wanted a new challenge to and to be my own boss. The opportunity presented itself and I decided to go for it. I spent the next few years learning all the aspects of owning my own business. Hard work, experience, and my strong desire to succeed led me to where I am today.

What should our readers know about your business?
I own an off-course golf retail store in Sun City West, AZ called Golf 4 Less. My background as a golf club professional was at private clubs and we committed from the start to give private club type customer service to all of our customers. We offer numerous services including; Golf Lessons, Fittings, Apparel, Shoes, Bags, Accessories, Grips, and repairs. I’m most proud of how our business has grown. It was not easy because at the start you work the hardest but get the least results. You have to keep your head down and keep grinding away. If you’re honest and treat people right, everything works out. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is to be patient. Things do always workout in the way you envision them. They also don’t usually work out on your envisioned timeline.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would start by taking them to play some great golf here in the Desert. Some of my favorite courses include; Briarwood Country Club, Wickenburg Ranch, and Desert Forrest. We would for sure try the Culinary Dropout one night for dinner and drinks. After that we might also consider hiking at one of the areas numerous trails.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my wife Vicki. Without her love and support, I wouldn’t be where I am today. One of the most rewarding parts of our journey is that it allowed us to spend more time together and with our kids. Vicki is my partner and has been there with me all the way.
