We had the good fortune of connecting with Deavron “The Urban Explorer” Dailey and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Deavron “The Urban Explorer”, how does your business help the community?
Seeking out and interacting with new or unfamiliar locations, communities, and art production spaces is one of the fundamental elements of my art practice. I use a wide range of artistic media to create my work. Determining which skills or talents I possess that align with the creative and social goals of a community allows me to make more of an impact while continuing my own creative pursuits. I am also a curator, program facilitator, and public artist that creates medium to large-scale artworks and installations. By sharing these experiences with other creatives and communities I am able to achieve tangible results that go far beyond words of encouragement.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I use a wide range of artistic media to create my work such as screen printing, painting, ceramics, writing, and more. More than one of these forms of artistic media often find their way into one project. I find inspiration in specific locations, buildings, landscape details, etc. I find great pleasure in determining which form of artistic media accurately depicts the feeling of interest, mood, or inspiration that was evoked within me. I have become known as “The Urban Explorer” in the art world based on my approach, content, and willingness to be outgoing. Social justice, perseverance, and developing a renewed sense of appreciation of our surroundings are themes that are often found in my work. But just like the world we live in, the themes and concepts addressed in my work change from time to time.

The road to becoming an established artist has been very challenging. By refusing to give up and using creative problem solving skills to overcome obstacles and the issues that come with “every day life” I developed a foundation for my art practice and means to attract more opportunities. Starting out, perceiving and following the energy of one small success to the next has helped my creative momentum and achievements grow exponentially over time.

I am actively searching for more public art opportunities, art residencies, and collaborations across the country.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
As a Detroit native who now lives and create in Pittsburgh, PA I am inspired by both of these industrial cities. Over time I have identified countless things to love about each city. If I were engaging visitors from another region I would show the locations in each city that has some of the most beautiful views. In Detroit I would take them to see the Detroit Riverwalk located along Belle Isle park. The Detroit Riverwalk has been voting the best in the country and Canada is clearly visible right across the water. In Pittsburgh I would first show them the Mt. Washington overlook. This view is one of the most spectacular that I have seen and you can see the entire city of Pittsburgh, the rivers that run through it, and Pittsburgh’s intriguing landscape. Starting with these locations will leave visitors mesmerized and inspired to see as much as possible of what each of these great cities have to offer.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to thank all of my family, friends, collectors, and supporters.
