We had the good fortune of connecting with Deniss Suhhanov and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Deniss, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
It is generally believed that environment around person affects him/her, but on the other hand I tend to think that this environment is built around you as you develop in your field. I was born in a small town on the outskirts of Estonia. As a child I saw my father drawing and, as befits a child, I took an example from him. As I grew up I noticed creative people in particular and it happened that over time there were more and more of them around me, which motivated me and helped me to develop. Later I moved to the capital and now art and creativity is an integral part of my life.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I do tattoos, and for the most part, I highlight myself in the black and gray realism style. At this point I can describe myself as one of the best tattoo artists in the country. I have my own private tattoo studio. I am not at the end of my creative journey and getting better is helped by self-criticism, hard honest work and the understanding that I can be better. It looks very brief on paper but in fact it is years of practice, constant search of the best solutions, courage to constantly step out of the comfort zone, the risk you are ready to take to achieve the goal, awareness of the obligations you undertake.
I realized that if you want to be better than others, you have to do things that others do not want to do, ignore or avoid. You don’t have to stop thinking you’ve reached your peak. Life challenges you all the time, and you have to have the courage to accept it. I have learned that a challenge is not an obstacle, I see it as a new opportunity. I do everything to ensure that the person who turned to me would get the best result I could offer myself in the same situation.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Living in Estonia, you have to understand that it’s a quite small country. The whole country can be driven from edge to edge in 4 hours. Yes, there are many beautiful places, but at the same time in 2 hours you can be already in the capital of Finland, taking the ferry in the evening by the next morning you will be in Stockholm – Sweden, traveling by car in 5 hours you will reach Riga, the capital of Latvia. In a week you can visit all these cities, but speaking of Estonia, it’s possible to allocate that here brightly expressed all four seasons, in summer, the sun almost never sets, it only descends to the water’s edge and the sunset almost immediately transformed into a sunrise. A must visit the creative district Telliskivi where you can see the works of Kiwie and Bordalo II and visit the photo exhibition Fotografiska. For summer holidays there are many beaches, but for a special experience you can visit the Viking village or the monastery in Palmse, soaked in ancient legends. Also you should visit Narva Castle, which is in the Guinness Book of Records. One of the best bars in Estonia “Sigmund Freud Bar”, which serves delicious Negroni, is a must for the evening).

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Yes, I agree, to some extent success depends not only on your actions and efforts. It’s not just people, but along the way I can single out a few people who have had a particular influence. My father, who opened for me the door to creativity, a friend who opened for me the world of street art, which widened the range of my interests. The co-owner of a tattoo studio and a tattoo artist who believed in my abilities and opened the doors of his studio to me. Other successful tattoo artists, music, the TV show “Miami Ink” and other factors also influenced me and kept me interested and gave me a spark. At this point, the main thing that fuels me is my wife and family, who support me and help make my ambitions a reality.
