We had the good fortune of connecting with Diana Taggart and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Diana, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I love this question. The essence of the question assumes that there is a traditional line of work and an alternative. And creatives love to be the avante garde of the workforce 😉
But in all seriousness, and without sounding trite, nearly all of my interests and career ideas throughout life have been in related to creative expression. As a kid and teenager, it started as performing arts, dance and such. Then into adulthood it was journalism, agency copywriting, and now that I’ve found my footing (mostly) as a business owner, I have new dreams of authorship.
So, the creative expression was always the direction — the focus area is where there’s room for evolution.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I own a copywriting business called Required Reading, where I help product-based brands, creative professionals, and passionate service-providers find distinct and deliberate voices.
At the core, I love helping people find clarity, feel confident, and newly equipped to share a more strategic brand message.
This is year 5 for Required Reading which I’m thankful for and proud of. Along with a forthcoming website and brand refresh, a shift in the air has been stirring for a few months now. Working for yourself isn’t always a smooth ride, and I’d say that solo business ownership has taught me more about myself than I ever imagined. I’m excited to see how the next 5 years continues to evolve the business.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love Phoenix, not just because it’s my home city, but because it’s been such a fun and surprising ride to see how it’s grown. An ideal weekend exploring would look something like having coffee and treats at either Dialog, Futuro, or Berdena’s, dinner at Valentine, browsing boutiques like Local Nomad, catching live music or DJ sets at Valley Bar or Crescent Ballroom, and hiking literally anywhere. Jewel of the Creek Preserve in Cave Creek is an absolute must.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There’s so many people, experiences, and definitely tangible resources that have worked together and informed me and my work up to this point.
My friends and family, my husband, my old creative teams at various agencies around Phoenix, and working with designers and collaborators in my business since I started have helped me grow in so many nuanced ways.
