We had the good fortune of connecting with Dineta Williams and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dineta, can you share a quote or affirmation with us?
“Youth is wasted on the young” George Bernard Shaw I spent so much time looking for outside fulfillment, It was inside of me all along.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Back in 2016 I directed a short film called “Aunties” I spent $1000 in festival submission fees and it was not excepted to any of the early festivals. That’s how A Night of Misfit Films was created, out of my frustration of not finding an audience. It made me question myself and my creative decisions. I started asking other creatives how they dealt with rejection. What I found out is that as creatives, we all suffer time to time from not feeling good enough. I decided then, that I would try to create a space for other creatives to screen films that might get rejected by the big film festivals. A Night of Misfit Films is in it’s fifth year, and we have been able to screen films from over a dozen countries. 2020 will be different because of the pandemic, but we will adapt, we will be safe and we will continue to give filmmakers a platform for sharing their voices. Oh, and Aunties finally found an audience and has been screened internationally and locally. Don’t give up on yourself, keep moving forward. ‘If you fall, fall on your back. If you can look up, you can get up”- Les Brown

Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
I would start their visit off with a nice early morning trail hike at the South Mountain Preserve, where there are lots of trails to choose from.,all that hiking is going to work up an appetite so then we would grab a hearty breakfast at Matt’s big Breakfast in Central Phoenix. With the summer heat in Arizona to think about, we would stay indoors and visit Wonderspaces in Scottsdale, they showcase vibrant cutting edge, thought provoking art installations. A visit to the Musical Instrument Museum in North Phoenix takes you on a roller coaster ride through music history, with over a hundred musical instruments on display from different cultures. Retuning back to downtown Phoenix for something sweet at The Onyx Sweet Shop. The menu is filled with an array of vegan and gluten free baked goods., along with the best Red Velvet cookies, this side of the Mississippi river. we may finish up the evening at Space 55. An up close and intimate theater, to watch a live performance.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are so many people who have believed in my vision and saved a seat for me at the table. How much time do we have? HAHAHAH. My husband John P. Trigg for always allowing me to be myself, and encouraging me to get back up when I fall down. L Gauthier RAAD ( Director of The Lebanese Independent Film Festival) for being the perfect creative twin, a girl could ever ask for. All of my fellow filmmakers that have trusted me to screen their films at A Night Of Misfit Films that I am the Director of., and the guests who have attended the film festival, that offered honest feedback that helped the film festival expand. To all of those that I didn’t mention by name, you know who you are, THANK YOU!!!
