We had the good fortune of connecting with Dreah Photography and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dreah, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
I can say that I am still working in my work life balance; being your own boss is great but very challenging at times. A year ago I was taking almost no breaks…ever. I was working all the time, answering to my emails in the middle of the night and had no work personal life balance whatsoever. In 2022 one of the big things I realised that me taking days off to rest is really important in my relationship with my clients and work in general; I can give my 100%, I am more patient and my everyday mood improved. I want to be there for my clients and give them the best experience, and without time to recharge, it’s really difficult.
Now, I am still trying to improve a couple things, but there is definitely a big difference in my quality or work and life.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I love these questions! I can say that I am the most proud of the fact that I never gave up, no matter how hard it was. It wasn’t easy, specially at the beginning. I was born and raised in Europe, and when I moved here I didn’t know too many people and I was very discouraging for me at the beginning, but I never stopped following my dream and I am very grateful for that. I am really excited about the future, I have some amazing projects in the next couple years and so many ideas that I want to put out in the world through my photos. It makes me smile every time I think about it!
There are so many talented photographers out there, and what sets us apart from each other in my opinion is ourselves. I do believe that what sets me apart from others is my heart for people. I don’t view my clients as my clients, but more as humans and friends. It’s easy to get caught up in a self-centered circle, and specially when you work for yourself. I love people and I put them and their needs and their emotions first and I love doing that. I developed the most beautiful friendships with some of my past clients and I wouldn’t change that for anything!
I have learned so many lessons along the way, and I do believe we learn something everyday and from every experience. Some of the lessons I learned that helps me on a daily basis in my business are: believe in yourself, create something of value and dream big, set your own trends; it’s ok to be different and definitely look back and learn from your mistakes!
My brand and story and definitely not ordinary, and even in the difficult times, you should always follow your heart.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
It’s so fun because I actually did that when my family visited me last year! Arizona is so beautiful and there are so many things to see. We will start by going on a road trip for a couple days and stop at Sedona on our way up north. I love hiking there, I know a couple beautiful trails with breathtaking views and that would probably be the first stop. After we experience a full day there, I would love to take them to Horseshoe Bend and Grand Canyon in a two days trip. I also never got the chance to visit Antelope Canyon so I would love to make that possible in this trip.
When we get back in the city, I am a big fan of downtown Phoenix and we can take a full day just walking around the city, going on rooftops and take photos of the most beautiful view over the city. I also love Tempe Town Lake, perfect for a night out; I love the restaurants and the Bridge at night-so beautiful!
For the last two days I would probably take them hiking at the Usery Mountain Park and Superstition Mountains, we can’t miss the beauty of the desert and the gorgeous scenery of the mountains at sunset.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Absolutely! I couldn’t be where I am without my husband. He was from the beginning, my biggest fan, and not only in my personal life, but in my career as well.
He saw my potential and he always encouraged, helped and lifted me up when I needed. Dreah Photography LLC would most likely not exist without him; I was doubting myself so much at the very beginning and I was discouraging myself thinking I am not good enough to follow my dream. He was the one that pushed me to try, because he said “he knew” I can. And I did!
So I would like to give a big, big shoutout to him! 🙂
