We had the good fortune of connecting with Katie & Alexis Patterson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Katie & Alexis, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Both of us are very creative and we love to share that gift with others. Not only as sisters, but as best friends, we felt like teaming up together to make a business out of something we both already do seemed like a no brainer. It was something we could do together and a great way to spend time with each other. We wanted to find something positive to take away during Covid, and this was something that we loved pouring a lot of our time into. It was a way for us to interact with people and to get to know people without having to be in contact because of all the regulations, still being connected & involved in people’s lives in some way. Even though Covid has died down in certain aspects where we are able to meet up with people again, it brings us so much joy to see our products being used in peoples daily lives, in all parts of the country and that is plenty reward in and of itself.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Katie: I just recently graduated with my bachelors in elementary education and am pursuing my masters in speech pathology. In every area of my life I strive to help others and bring joy to them, whether that be with our shared business or with my professional career. I was a student athlete my entire life and balancing being an athlete and all the adversity and challenges that come with it, along with excelling in school has taught me so many lessons. It definitely wasn’t easy, and there were many long nights where I was frustrated with my schooling or with my performance in sports. It has taught me not to let my performance dictate how I viewed myself. Others will always view me in ways I don’t want them to, and everyone will always have something to say, I learned to focus on only what I can control and do what I can to better myself. This is the same for our business. Some people will criticize our products or how we promote things or what we stand for, and I’ve had to learn that not everyone will like what we do and that’s okay. As long as we are happy with our work then that’s all that we can control.
Alexis: I graduated with a degree in Kinesiology and am currently pursuing my doctorate in Physical Therapy at NAU. Also bring a student athlete my entire life and being an extremely competitive collegiate athlete all 5 years of college, has taught me many things. In college there was a lot of pressure on me to perform and constantly be at my top game. I was the face of the program and it was a lot of pressure. I too had to learn that being the face of a program so widely known comes with a lot of judgment and attention, both good and bad. It takes a lot of strength to turn away from that and only focus on the good and what you can control. Often with any sort of career, most of the battle is learning to be okay with failure, and with not pleasing everyone. But what we both know is that we are so happy with the process we’ve made over the last year and a half of having our business and all the customers we’ve acquired. We are so proud of how hard we’ve worked to improve our business and products.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We would definitely say Sedona and Prescott would be a must. Both areas are so pretty and are filled with many historic relics from Arizona along with so many beautiful hiking spots that are just absolutely breathtaking. For a fun night on the town Old Town Scottsdale is also a great place to people watch and have some food and drinks with friends. The wildlife world zoo is also a must see, it’s a wonderful zoo and there is so much to see when you’re there. We also both really like country dancing and music and there are a few really cool places that have dancing and live bull riding here Roadrunner Bar and Saloon is our favorite, and we’ve found ourselves there many Saturday nights relaxing and having fun with friends, it’s definitely something we’d share with any friends who come into town.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
As sisters we share the same parents and both of them have been so supportive of us from the start of our business. They poured into it whether that be monetarily or simply just moral support. They are constantly asking how the business is doing or giving us input when we ask. They helped us out on the beginning with research and with getting supplies to start, which meant the world to us that they supported us that much to invest in it when it was still in its infant stages.
