We had the good fortune of connecting with Emily Grieve and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Emily, how does your business help the community?
I use two different ways to reach other people. I have a band that I make music with and I’m a Twitch Streamer.

With the band, Turn Zero, we write music to let people know that they aren’t alone. In my darkest times, I always turned to music to get me through whatever it was and I hope to be able to provide that to others.

As a Twitch Streamer, I cultivate a community led by kindness and inclusion. My streams are a safe place with a no hate tolerance. We play games together and, once again, make sure people don’t feel alone.

In a world that is primarily online, it’s hard to feel connected. I strive to bring that back.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I like to think that my authenticity is what makes me unique. A lot of creators make a persona that they use in their content and I don’t really believe in that. If I’m trying to build connections, I want to be genuine. Getting to this point has been an uphill battle.

One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced as a musician is finding committed members. Finding the perfect group of people has been a big struggle over the years as people grew and reevaluated what they wanted out of life. Lots of people have come and gone, but the line up we have feels really really good right now.

As a creative in general, one of my biggest issues has been my mental health. I have always believed in taking care of yourself and your family first. However, this means that when health issues arise, they need to be resolved so I can give my 100% to my projects. This has sometimes meant taking a break from streaming, or asking my band for help. Over the years, I have learned how to minimize the impact of my issues on my work and am learning to persevere through them without letting the problems become detrimental.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
One of my favorite things about the Phoenix area is the number of local coffee shops! I love to get out of the house and just relax. Jobot in Downtown Phoenix, Jarrod’s in Downtown Mesa, The Nile Coffeeshop in Downtown Mesa, and Sozo in Chandler are my favorite spots. They all host local musicians as well. I have played at each of these locations as my journey has progressed.

As far as favorite food joints, Floridino’s is 100% my favorite food place. The pizza is S tier and I go there any excuse that I have. Shake Shack is my other go-to. They have the best chicken sandwiches around.

I would also take you to the local card shops. Gamer’s Guild has free to play board games and is a great way to spend quality time with your friends. My recent obsession has been with Primetime Cards and Games, though. A friend of mine bamboozled me into coming to a Pokemon tournament (I hadn’t played since 2016) and it renewed my love for the game. Since then, I’ve been to the shop quite a few times to play and go through cards casually. The vibes at both of these shops are so welcoming and cards and games are a big part of my personal identity.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to dedicate my success to my sister Melissa. She has supported me ever since my first open mic back in high school. Even living across the country from me, Melissa has done everything she could to contribute to all of my creative endeavors, including but not limited to, the band and my Twitch streaming.
