We had the good fortune of connecting with Emma Hurren and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Emma, what do you think makes you most happy? Why?
Traveling and spending time in the outdoors makes me so happy! Love exploring new places, meeting new people, and going out for long, big hikes. Love the excitement of the unknown, the unpredictability, and the sense of adventure.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My brand Living with the Wolf all came about when I decided to start blogging about my chronic illness, Lupus. I wanted to share my story about what life is like living with a chronic illness, spread awareness, and help others. I wanted to show how you can still enjoy doing the things you love, despite having a chronic illness. How it’s more about adaption and management. My book, ‘How I Tamed the Wolf’, which is available to buy on Amazon, shows just that. It shows how to travel with a chronic illness, how to get outdoors on hikes, exercise, etc. I also share my journey, and how it hasn’t been all plain sailing for me. I try to keep everything real on my social media. If I am having a bad day with my illness I will share it. I want people to be able to relate, and not feel alone. I am also a big believer in following your dreams, spending time outdoors, and looking after your mental health.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take them for a weekend away in Sedona. We would hire a little apartment with a pool. We would do some hikes. I would try to choose some of the quieter trails, as I’m not a fan of busy trails. My favorite trail is a one-up Soldiers Pass. We then head to a lovely viewpoint of Catherdral rock for sunset. My favorite spot for sunset! We then go out for tea for some yummy pizza. If I wasn’t going to Sedona, I probably take them to Page to see Horseshoe Bend and Antelope Canyon, or head across to the Grand Canyon National Park.
Depending on their ability, I would either do the Bright Angel’s Trail (my favorite), or part of the Rim to Rim hike.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My parents who helped me find my love for travel and hiking from a very young age.
