Meet Eric Laws | Sound Mixer – Composer – Musician

We had the good fortune of connecting with Eric Laws and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Eric, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My lifelong passion of Music & Film inspired me to develop professional skills in the art of Multi-Media production.I had been self-employed for many years, but once I created the business name/brand “Sound Laws LLC” it was much easier to promote professional services, instead of feeling like I was just promoting myself. In the media world, equipment can often be labeled with your department “Sound” followed by your last name “Laws”, a friend of mine in the Record Industry (Dan Lauricella) noticed this labeling. He made a suggestion that Sound Laws would make a great business name, & it stuck.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am proud of a recent series I worked on for AMC Anne Rice’s “Interview with the Vampire” which premiered Oct 3rd 2022 & has been getting rave reviews. I was fortunate enough to meet & also play piano in New Orleans for Anne Rice while she was still alive, early in my career. She was an artist who was dear to my heart especially during my youth & one of the reasons I originally moved to New Orleans, so working on her current project now feels like I’m ensuring her Legacy & an ongoing accomplishment in my career. My work takes me to to places all over the globe but I have a soft spot for New Orleans. Last year my family evacuated New Orleans due to Hurricane Ida & we ended up staying in Tempe/Phoenix Area. Much to my surprise a close New Orleans native friend (who is a DP/Cinematographer) was working on a TV show in Phoenix & was talking about moving there. I told him we would re-visit in 2022 & talk shop. He has since bought a house, moved to Tempe & working on a A&E production called “Triple Digit Flip” . I spent the summer in Phoenix this year (during hurricane season) & We discussed an opportunity for me to visit Phoenix more often to work on the show. We have worked on many film productions together & it would be great to see the TV production side of Phoenix.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Start with brunch at the Mission, then shopping & art galleries in Old Scottsdale Head to the Desert Botanical Gardens or Phoenix Art Museum if it’s too hot, have a cocktail at one of the many speak easy’s such as the Undertow or White Rabbit end with a live show at the Marquee theater.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My Shoutout would be to my family. I come from a long line of talented & supportive family members, many of of which are musicians who have taught & mentored me ever since I was a small child. My father has a long history of performing alongside famous musicians & there is even a small documentary about his mother (my Mamaw) who grew up playing music in the hills of Tennessee. On my mother’s side there may even be a connection to the Czech composer Antonín Leopold Dvořák. So needless to say I’ve alway been surrounded by music & was destined to play some part in the audio world.
