We had the good fortune of connecting with Esther Martínez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Esther, what’s the most important lesson your business/career has taught you?
The most important lesson that my business taught me is that I should believe in me, I need to love myself, love my body, my smile, my live. Because when you love yourself and believe in yourself, you can show to the world the person you are, you can give your best in each painting, in each illustration … You make people feel the magic, the magic of your work.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
It has not been an easy way to get here. But dedication and love for what I do is what keeps me firm and happy. I’m constantly training, learning more techniques and trying different things. I love sharing experiences with other artists and I love group workshops where we all work together uniting our strengths, knowledge and experience. I really enjoy work with linoleum, I love engraving. The result is always a surprise and I think it is magical. I studied engraving in a beautiful place in Veracruz called “La Ceiba Gráfica” It is an artist residence where you learn about this technique and others and you always meet artists from other parts of the world who always bring good things to your life. One lessons that I had learned is that you have to be yourself. I am showing an intimate part of me in some pieces, they talk about sex, and it’s been a bit hard to get it out of me, and show it, but I’m really happy with the result.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I live in paradise, yes! Because I live in Cancún, where the sea has an incredible blue and the beaches are spectacular. We would definitely eat tacos and drink a good mezcal. Unfortunately there are not many art galleries, but I have the solution because we could visit the studios of my artist friends and maybe try to work together in an art project. We can go diving, snorkeling and eat delicious fish on the beach. Visit the markets and then enjoy the sunset. The weather is good here so we can do a lot of things!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Of course none of this would be possible without people who have supported me over years and have one art work of mine. But I need to give special thanks to Hector, who one day told me: – For me life would not have meaning if I don’t work in what I love. This sentence changed my life! And of course I am very grateful to Ana Sofía, a great artist and woman that made this interview with you possible. So thank you to all of you.
