Meet G Golec | Fashion designer

We had the good fortune of connecting with G Golec and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi G, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Initially it was just a hobby. I enjoyed creating items from disused materials and would do it for fun, making gifts for friends or decor for festivals. When I started making little leg-chain harnesses from tractor rubber and realised it was popular, that was when I saw business potential in the idea. From there it just grew and grew

What should our readers know about your business?
Broke Boutique is an eco-fashion brand that only uses materials which would otherwise end up in landfill or incinerated. I’m quite specific about that, as many brands (particularly large ones) have simply started to use the buzz words “sustainable” or “ethical” without any real commitments or meaning behind those words. I also love to use discarded materials and completely transform them, I like to make them unrecognisable from their original use. I really think it helps bend peoples minds into a new way of thinking about trash. I got to where I am today with a lot, and I mean A LOT, of hard work. I left high school and never went on to further education, so everything I’ve learned has been through trial and error, that’s from the fashion side of things as well as the business side. I haven’t been without help, but the lack of formal education in any aspect has definitely made the road a longer one. I love to learn and grow though and I wouldn’t change a thing. I’ve had a wicked life and the journey has been a total joy ride, in all the best ways.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well I live on a boat, so firstly I’d be dragging them to mine for a boat move. We’d see London from the water. Then some shopping at F.A.B London or, if it’s the right time of year, Le Boutique Bazaar and Satanic Flea Market. I’d definitely have to take them for some pre-evening shots at Garlic & Shots. Then the nights would be spent going to The Glory, Electrowerks or The Curtain. On a Sunday we’d definitely need to go for a roast at Ridley Road Social Club. Camden is always a classic for visitors, I’d take them to the bagel shop and then pop to Rough Trade records to see if they’ve got something on. I also have a dog, so mega walks would be in order. Leeloo (my dog) LOVES Victoria park, so we’d be obliged to pop there and we could go on market day and buy expensive (but LUSH) cheese. Another great walk is Abney Park, it’s a cemetery that goes on forever and it’s sooo beautiful. After all of that we’d gouch out and I’d make a mountain of nachos.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
This is a great question. Honestly, too many to mention. The love and support from everyone who’s touched my life has a part to play in the growth and popularity of Broke Boutique. They all deserve a mention and a massive thank you. But my biggest fan and constant pillar of support is my awesome husband.
