We had the good fortune of connecting with Gaby Olson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Gaby, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
Life is a series of challenges that we face everyday and balancing it all can be very hard. Whether it be your relationship, family or work. Andy and I both work full time, 40+ hours a week and many times the questions arise about focusing and investing ourselves full time into photography or not. We manage to survive with less hours of sleep and a more messy house because we don’t have much time for ourselves. We spend nights editing and enjoy our “dates” differently than other couples as we consider going to a photoshoot as “going out.” Working together has definitely made our relationship stronger and presents its own challenges. Do we agree on everything? No. No way! In fact we disagree on a great deal but the discussions keep new ideas coming in and always drives us to try new things, think outside the box and overall improve our work from both a technical standpoint as well as an artistic one. I absolutely love working with my husband and sometimes, well…not so much.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
We are photographers and love the concept of photography. It is an art form like no other. The medium is little more than recorded exposure to time and light. And with that, a moment lives again. To think about how powerful an image can be, all the emotions that a capture can bring… that last hug or smile, multiple generations of life, that belly of a pregnant lady marking new beginnings and the miracle of life… the list goes on… Then you realize how important our art is.

There is a lot to be proud of, looking back when we just started, it’s just crazy to see how much we have grown. One of the coolest things was to see one of our photos made into a tattoo, a painting, and even displayed in Times Square.

When you have creative minds working together to make something special, a lot of ideas are shared. Deciding which good idea not to go with is challenging. But there are times when you have writer’s block and can’t come up with something new to try. If that happens, just be true to you. Do you. Be yourself and the art will come naturally.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If we were to entertain, we might do a wine tour and visit Sedona, Cottonwood, Jerome and Prescott. After seeing what needs to be seen, we’ll come back to the city and check out the night life in the arts district or by Tempe Town Lake. Street dancing and live music. Art walks and food tours. Play some challenging golf games at Estrella and some easy par threes in Phoenix. We might partake in some river tubing on the Salt River and visit the Casino! Our week is packed with all that there is to see and do.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?

These two absolutely deserve recognition, they have made a big impact in the success of my business.
