We had the good fortune of connecting with Georgia Fuchs and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Georgia, why did you pursue a creative career?
I have always loved the arts from a very young age. When I got older and had my own place, I enjoyed moving furniture around in different configurations to see what looked the best, and or what worked the best. I had wanted to pursue an art career my first go around to college, but I didn’t think it would pay the bills. So I ended up with a business administration degree instead. However, almost all of my electives were in art. Once my family was grown and pretty much out of the house, I had some family members encourage me to go and take some Interior Design classes at our local community college. That is all it took and I knew I had to get my degree, work in the field, or start my own business.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I have always had a love of the arts. I have a Business Degree and thought that was all I needed. However, I never quite felt fulfilled. One day I was talking to my niece who was attending a local community college that has an esteemed Interior Design Program. She suggested I take just one class. Well, that’s all it took and I wanted to complete the degree. With home life and work, it took me 2 1/2 years to complete my AAS in Interior Design specializing in Kitchen and Bath. It was not an easy program and being older having to learn all the technology was a challenge, but I did it and in the end passed the test for the Associate Kitchen and Bath Designer (AKBD) with the NKBA accreditation. (National Kitchen and Bath Association). I love figuring out the puzzle that a kitchen and bath design will provide. I use Chief Architect if someone wants to move things around or if they just want to see a final design I have suggested. Many clients are not visual and need that extra help. What sets me apart from other designers is first of all my degree, but second, its my passion for helping people. Design does impact lives as quoted by ASID (Association of Interior Designers). I am a member of NKBA, and ASID. I have served on the local chapter boards for each organization for a total of 6 years so far. If someone hires me I will always be looking out for them and making sure the design fits their lifestyle, style, budget and make it a fun process without the overwhelming factor.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live in the suburbs, but there are so many fun and interesting shops and restaurants in Brookside which is about 25 minutes from my home in Kansas City Missouri. After that day, the next day we would spend at the Legends area in Kansas City Kansas. It is a large outdoor shopping area close to the KC Race track and Soccer field.
If it’s Basketball season I would take them to a KU Basketball game at Allen Fieldhouse in Lawrence KS.
If it’s Football Season, then we would go to either a Chiefs game or KU game.
Last but not least would be to go to one of the nicer restaurants on the Plaza.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My niece, Courtney Mika, and my dad were two of my major influencers to go back to school and take design classes. Once I got involved at the local community college, the professors and other students, were very welcoming, positive, and gave me a lot of confidence to do what I am doing today. One of my favorite professors was Kathryn Grube!
