We had the good fortune of connecting with Aida Franco and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Aida, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I come from an artistic family and so I was exposed to art from the beginning. I began my business as therapy while I was going through a divorce. I have been able to provide for my daughter with this business, which is incredibly empowering and liberating. I’m very fortunate to have the freedom to work my own hours, to be my own boss, and to express myself through my designs.
What should our readers know about your business?
I’ve come a long way since I began my business about six years ago. It’s one of the most rewarding challenges you can undertake and it requires a stubborn persistence. In my case, that means going on an artist’s never-ending journey and learning how to market effectively. Social media has made things possible for small businesses in ways that hadn’t existed before – you can be scrappy and agile. I admit that I sort of cringe when I look at my photos of my earliest pieces. The lighting was poor, my camera angles didn’t highlight the furniture very well, etc etc. Today I know the power of presenting your work in its best light – literally! – and I use the right gear to get the job done. Like my art itself, I’m a perfectionist and continue to tweak and improve every step of the way.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live in Phoenix and the entire state is blessed with spectacular natural scenery. I would take my best friend on hikes throughout the Phoenix valley, and we’d certainly spend time on the lakes that dot the area. There’s great nightlife in Phoenix, so we’ll get our party on in the evenings! We definitely can’t miss two or three days in Sedona to be awestruck by the red-rock buttes, steep canyon walls, and pine forests. There’s a vibrant arts community to explore in Sedona, too. Flagstaff is nearby, which has a funky mountain college city vibe. And since we’re that close, can we really miss the Grand Canyon? Nope! It’s a must-see, but there are lesser-known places where I’ll take my friend, like Horseshoe Bend and Antelope Canyon. Words can’t describe, you’ve gotta look them up and go there!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Love this! Shoutout to two of my good friends for all the love and support they have provided – Melissa Eaton from @thetopdrawerRVA and Leigh Anne Carrier from @HueandMoxie. Huge shoutout for all their love, encouragement, and support! Naturally, to my family for all their love and kind words. To my dedicated clients and followers for all the love, for their own shoutouts for each and every piece I create! Big shoutout to Dixie Belle and Paint Couture for our trusting relationship. And last but not least, a loud shoutout to my sweet daughter, my biggest fan with unconditional love. I am very blessed to be surrounded by such positive people in my life.
