We had the good fortune of connecting with Ginger Hamilton and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ginger, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I think the most important factor behind my success really consists of two things. The first being consistency, and the second being versatility. Consistency is a hard one, because when you work for yourself, you really have to be self motivated and creative with reaching out to people, finding new avenues to showcase your work and/or find new clients, etc. On the same hand, Versatility is so so so important to find success while you are in the early stages of your art career. I clearly have a really strong brand style with the black and white text, but not limiting myself on what I can provide for my clients or my own creative ideas has helped me grow the most. The amount of times someone has asked me to do something outside of my typical style, and I’ve said “Yes” (knowing damn well I would have to figure it out has I go) has truly been a catalyst in the success of my career as an artist. When you are capable of doing a lot of things, offering a multitude of different styles. don’t keep yourself in a box just because it fits with the brand.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I think what sets me apart from others is the simplicity of my style. I like to think of it as minimally maximalist. It’s just black and white, usually text, in my own handwriting. That’s it. But what sets it apart is the way I present that. I present it in a way that is hard to read a lot of times, so it forces you to engage with It and try to figure out what it’s saying to you.
How did I get here?
Hard work, time, risks, consistency. Staying true to my style, but still not putting myself in a box. Trying new things, being okay with failing at some of them, and taking everything as a learning experience to do better next time. You really have to get comfortable putting yourself out there. It sounds cliche, but it’s true. Repetition, just always creating something also helps. Social media has totally tricked us into thinking that everyone just creates amazing things all the time, but the reality is, even the professionals create a lot of shit, you just don’t see their failures as often.
Was it easy?
Helllll no. It’s still not easy & its not a linear journey. I can have a huge success one day and the next have something that is a total flop. One of my favorite quotes is “all you see from the mountain top is more mountains”. Which really shows what a growth mindset looks like while you are trying to build something. I am trying to build my own art career, and compared to where I was when I started out, you could say I am at the top of the mountain, but from where I am standing now, without looking backwards, all I can see is where I can go next.
You overcome challenges, by learning from them, never getting too high, never getting too low and sticking with it.
Early on in my career, I wasn’t as confident in my work because it didn’t look like “real” art, but what even is real art? Along with growing over the years, I have become so much more confident knowing that I am good at what I do and what I offer, and I accept the fact that it is not for everyone. The people that love my work are the people I want to work with. Not everyone has to love it or appreciate it and that is totally fine.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We would totally be hitting Camelback Mountain first thing one morning to spend some time outside, get our bodies moving. I’d definitely be taking them with me to my personal trainer the rest of the week, he’s hands down one of the best in the Valley, Keith King at Elev8 Fitness in Chandler
We would definitely be grabbing coffee at Kream and checking out For the People, maybe having a lunch and happy hour moment at Postino and grabbing dinner at Belly. I’d love to take then down to Roosevelt Row, we have to check out the Churchill and all of the fun markets going on out there on the weekends.
I’d of course make my friends come to the Art House Gilbert to take a one of my painting classes 🙂
We’d be hitting up my fav dive bar, Champs to play some darts & sitting on my patio to watch the sunset!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My Family. Hands down they have always been my biggest support system. They have helped me in more ways than I could ever list out. Mom, Dad, Keith, Reagan and Jacob, I literally could not do this without you..
