We had the good fortune of connecting with Denise Yaghmourian and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Denise, can you share a quote or affirmation with us?
My most favorite phrase is, “Keep On Truckin.” It’s been around for a long time and for some reason it always makes me smile and helps kick the funk. It’s simple and to the point. It helps remind me of the importance of spending some amount of time everyday doing my work. That might be working on art ideas and processes or even cleaning up my studio. If I am unable to put in a full day at my studio, I do my best to do some work from home,
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My fiber series emphasizes minimalistic and meditative properties. I begin by wrapping the piece with mass produced bra and corset making hook and eye tape and then combine that with hand sewn threads between the elements, to create intricate pattern and grid designs. The works also makes statements, speaking metaphorically, about restrictions and constrictions put upon different genders and races throughout history and in society today. My work is inspired by my Grandmother’s love of sewing, the quiet, meditative qualities of Agnes Martin’s work, and the joy of creating new ways to use traditional sewing materials.
