We had the good fortune of connecting with Herman Mendoza and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Herman, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
Managing time has been a challenge over the years because of my responsibilities as a Pastor. Traveling, speaking and counseling. My work life balance has changed over the years due to prioritizing the most needed attention that’s on the top of my list. I start from there and move down the list on a daily basis. If it has to Cary on the next day I will engage in the matter, address it and move on to the next area that needs my attention. What’s most imperative in maintaining a well balanced life is time for family, friends, and yourself. The most critical time is spending it with God in prayer, reading the Holy Bible and reflecting on your day and the weeks to come. In how you can better your relationship with God and others. In light of that; you start to understand that we have to take our lives one step at a time and not exasperate your number one issue and dwell on it. But come up with solutions to bring resolution and closure to a situation, rather then beat yourself over the head and stay stagnated on the same issues.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am the director of a children’s program dubbed “Powerhouse Kids” we serve all children and youth around our community in Queens, NY. With free classes. Reaching children of all ethnic group, social background and economic status. Training them in: Pottery, Arts and Crafts, Piano, TaeKwondo, Math, Violen, coding class, photography., basketball and soccer. We also have parenting classes for the parents such as: ESL, Counseling sessions, and parenting tools that they can use at home. We have reached over 15,000 families in the NYC area. Most of the students are now volunteers teaching their younger counterparts. This ministry is now in 9 countries and around the USA. We also collaborate with the Police Academy in a youth program to better understand the police culture. I attribute all my successes to God, he has allowed me to experience recognition by former presidents, ministering to NBA and MLB players. Chaplaincy work to law enforcement and justices. United Nations prayer gathering that I was a speaker. And to speak on behalf of a global movement called 4/14 Window as one of the speakers.

I have overcome many challenges in my humble beginnings. I am a Hispanic/American and I work for a Korean organization in the early days of my career it was difficult to simulate and acclimate to the culture. But over the years I have learned that hard work and discipline pays off. Respect, humility, transparency and most important my relationship with God. That is what paved the way for me in my successes.

As an author I have learned that when you apply biblical principales to everyday life things seem more clearer and reachable. Despite setbacks or challenges perhaps even dealing with your past. God can make a way for you. If you put your trust in Him and don’t stay knocked down get back up and fight another day for all the dreams and visions that God has given you. So that in return you may give back to the world all that He has taught you. So that others may break free from their strongholds as we were all once in.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I think one of many interesting places to visit, is my church: Promise Ministries International in Flushing, Queens. We are a 4,000 membership congregation with an incredible theater that sits over 1,400 people. Our facility has a number of other chapels as we’ll. but most importantly we are known for our hospitality. Great services.

Come to the borough of Queens in NYC we are the microcosm of diversity. It’s a community that represents the world. We have over 138 languages spoken. Queens holds the Guinness World Record for “most ethnically diverse urban area on the planet” with its vast variety to sooth your taste buds of authentic food from Asia, Latin America, Africa, and USA traditional foods. The music genres are of all likes.

Or come out to Citifield and check out a National Baseball game with the NY METS.. Or perhaps a match with the greatest players in tennis at the US Open in Flushing, Queens. If your in to gardens visit the Queens Botanical Garden. Or visit the Flushing Meadows Park with its Zoos and Aquariums.

There’s lots to discover and explore.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for saving me. My Mom and Dad who loved me unconditionally and supported me in all my trials they are with the Lord now. My wife Alexandra and my children they’re my biggest fans praying for my success each and every day. Also my mentor the late Rev. Leroy Ricksy a graduate of Columbia university. He poured out his knowledge, love, resources and time to shape me to become the man I am today. Last but not least my church Promise Ministries International, senior Pastor Ben Hur, Rev, Nam Soo Kim, emeritus and congregation for supporting me in all of my endeavors.
