We had the good fortune of connecting with Hugo Barrios and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Hugo, do you have a budget? how do you think about personal finances?
I’m pretty frugal. I do like to re-purpose spent items or reuse certain things to manufacture of my own products and example I tie flies. I had a chicken that died of natural causes, and I collected all its feathers do using my fly tying old furniture that has been broken, I salvage the wood to use in my crank bait making, there are some items that I cannot get away from purchasing as far as raw materials. I just need to use raw material instead of trying to repurpose certain things.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I find myself, making tattoos and commissions of art full time. It was not an easy journey. Tattooing is not a career I chose for myself. It actually chose me twice. Both times during a low period of life. Out of necessity, I start started tattooing, myself and family. Making mediocre tattoos. I’ve been an artist since childhood so that was easy for me. Adjusting my mind to work slower and more meticulous, and with precision was hard. I definitely have come a long way in the craft of tattooing. Now, I’m equally passionate or more so about fishing and making baits to catch fish with. I make both flies and hard baits. More specific crank baits made of wood. Flies are for fly fishing. Two very different types of fishing. I enjoy all types of fishing.
I have a YouTube channel that’s shows all of my crafts, from tattooing to oil painting, and even my fishing and lure crafting.
I’ve learned that I’m just a crafter. Everything I do is a craft in some form or another. I was lucky to find my talent early. With that came experience, and experience flows like energy, you just have to adapt with it. Hugobaits is my brand. It encompasses everything I do. Go and subscribe https://m.youtube.com/c/hugobaits

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’d take them to hike Tonto creek natural bridge. Maybe swing by the Old County Inn in Pine Arizona. That type of small town stuff. I don’t live in the Valley anymore, I’m very grateful for that! Phoenix is like a war zone now. I don’t like stress or stressful environments. So I now reside in peaceful Payson Arizona

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My wife for pushing me every step of the way! Mom and siblings for letting me practice my tattooing on them when they knew I sucked! These people never gave up on me. And last but not least my faith in my gods! For giving me the strength to pursue my endeavors.
