We had the good fortune of connecting with Hunter Smith and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Hunter, what habits do you feel helped you succeed?
Consistency. When it comes to business, beef, burgers, customers, and employees, consistency is just as important as the product and service you provide. That has been a mantra for myself and my business partner since the beginning of this project in Capital Farms, We aim to be consistent in the way we conduct ourselves in business and in making deals with other businesses when we say we are going to do it. We do it. Even to the smallest transaction of a single burger or beef purchase at the storefront, we want to do that with consistent hours, enthusiastic/knowledgeable service, quality of product, and customer satisfaction. That’s the kind of consistency coupled with a quality product and service our team provides that helps us excel.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I feel what makes me different and the system that I thrive in is hyper fixation. This is something that I have utilized since my high school days of Meat Evaluation for the Future Farmers Association (FFA). This is really where I got my start in the meat industry and fell in love with it by having success early on. My singular focus on this allowed me to compete at the highest level and win various contests even being named 2nd High Point individual in the ultracompetitive state of Texas. I continued this passion through college as I worked in the university custom processing facility, collegiate meat judging, and various industry opportunities. This ultimately led me to pursue a master’s in Meat Science at Auburn University. This is where I conducted various research projects and began to build industry connections. Thus, all of this time invested in learning about a singular industry led me to my first job in Granbury, TX for a massive start-up meat processing facility to employ over 100 employees. I was the 2nd person hired on as the lead salesman and assisted in operations to launch this project. Unfortunately, after 3 months, the project was terminated due to circumstances out of our control and I was unemployed for the first time. That was a tough chapter in my life but I stayed focused and that job ultimately led me to Capital Farms. I believe that if you do the best possible, good things will come.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My favorite spots to visit in Arizona are the hiking trails in Sedona, the mountains in Flagstaff, and the golf and western culture of Wickenburg. It’s fun to show people who are unfamiliar with Arizona all the diverse offerings we have here. Of course, I would have to show my friends the best places to eat in the valley and go shopping in Phoenix/Scottsdale. On a perfect day of eating my way through the valley, I would start the morning off at local coffee shops such as SPCE (PHX) and Pair Cupworks (PHX). Then get pastries and cookies at Buttermilk and Honey Bakeshop (Wickenburg). For lunch, my go-to spots are Worth Takeaway (Mesa), and Welcome Diner (PHX). I have lost count of how many times I have met friends for lunch at those spots. Lastly, I would take any guests to the absolute best restaurant in the valley, Alterra at Mountain House Lodge (Scottsdale), this place has views for miles from each table, the best locally sourced plates, great attention to detail, quality of food, and excellent cocktails and wines. A must-try restaurant. If you couldn’t tell already, I also LOVE food and have no limits to the distance I will travel for it. I have driven to L.A. just for burgers, flown to CDMX for Pujol, tried every poke spot in Oahu during my 1-year stay, and slept overnight in line at Snows BBQ, to just name a few.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The team at Capital Farms. Daily these people work their tails off to make each customer feel special. Daily they put their heart and soul into this company and they appreciate kind words and even bad reviews they take it personally to do better. So I want to personally thank Kari, Bri, Chino, Cecilia, Hugo, Jami, Scout, and Monse for all the support they provide daily.
