Meet ida liu | New Media Producer / Instagrammer

We had the good fortune of connecting with ida liu and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi ida, what role has risk played in your life or career?
“Don’t choose comfort when you should struggle.”
I used to be afraid of taking risks, afraid of all the uncertain and unplanned things. When I first entered the workforce and prepared for my first job, I chose the job which is more related to the department I graduated with, the Department of Journalism — an automotive media reporter.
However, I lost my business passion because of the repetitive job description. A year later, I took on my first risk in life, I gave my naked resignation.
During the three months of being in between jobs, I started to learn about advertising through online courses, and was recognized by many companies. Just when I was about to accept the offer, a recruitment message from a Youtube channel disrupted everything.
Yes, I took my risk again. I gave up all the offers I had and applied for jobs again with a resume with no experience in program production. The long wait made me wonder if I was a little too willful and believed in the value of taking risks. A month later, I won the only opening and got the job I wanted most at the time.
Yes, taking risks may not necessarily lead to success, but no risks you will only stagnate.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
In Taiwan, Youtube was not officially established until October 2007, and it has only been in the past 10 years that new media audio and video content has gradually become a mainstream trend. There are many different ways to run a successful Youtube channel, but none of them can be separated from an important core – creativity.
Especially with the rise of “short videos” in recent years, viewers who have been watching online videos for many years have become increasingly picky about content. The reasons for the success or failure of a film include the selection of film content, film editing, post-release publicity, etc.
Based on the number of subscriptions, our channel is currently among the top 20 in Taiwan.Different from other life-style, educational, and imitative videos at that time, we focused on “experience other people’s work” as the main theme of the film.
In order to improve the quality of the video, we adopted a production scale similar to that of a traditional TV festival, each recording requires a team of nearly 10 people. In addition, in order to shorten the distance with the audience, we adopted a recording method similar to a reality show. We deliberately retained the private interactions and interactions between the performers and the behind-the-scenes staff in the video.
For me, what excites me most is the challenge and creativity of the job. Although it seems that there are many subjects when shooting with the theme of industry, it is necessary to capture the differences without changing the true appearance of the profession. Also, we need to combine the theme of the video with some content that will make the audience curious and like it. This is not an easy task, but it is also the reason why I love this job.
Many people think that this job is free and allows them to travel abroad and experience many different things. However, in fact, this job is far more tiring and cumbersome than most people imagine. Due to the uncertainty of shooting time, we often do not have fixed holidays. Shooting one video after another also forces us to perform multiple different tasks at the same time.
I deeply understand the saying “Everyone is a screw, and perfect cooperation can turn a huge gear.” All seemingly insignificant work content is a boost to the success of the finished product.
So, my dear, don’t underestimate yourself just because your work content and position are not as important as others. And never compromise with yourself, the definition of success is not 100 points, because you can always do better than you are now.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Although Taiwan is small, it has many diverse scenery and geographical environments. Just in the city alone, you can enjoy sea and mountain views within a two-hour drive. But since it’s a week trip, in addition to the must-see attractions and delicious food in the city, I would recommend enjoying the island style that is different from the city!
First, I would take them to the night market, which is a food gathering place where you can taste all of Taiwan’s most famous snacks, such as sweet potato balls, Oyster Omelette, Taiwanese meatballs, baked pepper buns, and more.
In the evening, I will take them to climb a hill in the city, Xiangshan, where you can overlook the entire night view of Taipei and the famous Taipei 101, the tallest building in Taiwan. The next day, we will ride bicycles around the riverside together, enjoying the breeze and warm sunshine, and then ride all the way to the alleys of the city to find some cute cafes and grocery stores.
In the second half of the journey, I will take you out of the city and to Orchid Island, which I think is the most beautiful island in Taiwan. We can sit together in the pavilion by the sea and have a picnic while enjoying the sea breeze. In addition, you must not miss Orchid Island’s most famous “Glass Sea”. The water is as clear as glass. Whether you are diving or scuba diving, you will see full of fish, turtles, and all kinds of beautiful things undersea!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Before college, I stayed in Kaohsiung, a city in southern Taiwan, studying and living. After I moved to Taipei to study in the major which I was eager for, I have been working ever since. No matter what decision I made, my family never stopped me, questioned me, or tried to persuade me, so that I could run forward without any scruples. So, of course my first shoutout is dedicated to my family!
My team and supervisors are the biggest promoters of my development. Whether it is my work ability, my values in life, or my emotional problems, they gave me confidence and courage a lot. If it were not for them, I wouldn’t have known that I love film production, new media so much! Although some of us have left the YouTube channel where I worked before, even so, we are still working hard for the common dream everywhere.
Finally, I gonna shoutout to myself, thank you for bravely stepping out of the comfort zone, accepting challenges and believing in yourself!
