We had the good fortune of connecting with Irving Reyes and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Irving, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I believe taking risks are necessary to move forward in life, but it’s important to make sure those risks are calculated and thought out. Most barbershops are opened by a team of barbers but in my case I decided to go at it alone. I had to make sure I had enough clientele to pay my bills while I found other barbers to join my shop. Another risk I took was paying for everything with cold, hard cash and not taking out a loan. I made sure to list every single expense and created a budget with some wiggle room. Taking risks are what led me to have my own business and not work for anyone else and so I encourage everyone to take risks in their own lives.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Our barbershop has a diverse team of barbers. We have experienced barbers that have been cutting for years, as well as some newer barbers who are well versed with the latest styles and haircuts. I’m proud that the shop has had enough clients to keep all our barbers busy and I am looking to expand the shop by adding another station and additional seating to accommodate all our customers. Eventually, I’d like to open a second location. Finding the right location was not easy, luckily we were able to find a good deal at a reasonable location. We didn’t know the amount of foot traffic and exposure the plaza had but we saw potential as we were on the corner of a big intersection. The unit was previously a beauty salon so the set up was somewhat there, but I completely remodeled the place because I wanted a modern and clean look. I shopped around for the best prices and best quality possible for chairs, couches, the reception desk. I even purchased some items overseas straight from the manufacturer without any experience on how importing goods worked. It was a rollercoaster of emotions, and a lot of headaches but never lost faith and one way or another figured things out. One thing this journey has taught me is that there is never “a right time”. If you wait for things to be perfect or you just need to do “a little more research” you’ll never take the leap. The hardest part is beginning and before you know it the finish line is right ahead of you.

I’d like for everyone to know that here at Visionz Barbershop we are always innovating and improving at everything we do!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’ll be honest and admit that I don’t go out much. I’d recommend downtown Gilbert, and even downtown Mesa is beginning to get new, modern dining places.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to shoutout several friends who gave up their time to help with the remodeling of the barbershop. They listened to my ideas and helped me execute them all. A shoutout to my brother Alex, and my father-in-law, Carlos. The biggest shoutout to goes to my wife Karla, she’s been my right hand through it all.
