We had the good fortune of connecting with J. Gentile and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi J., why did you pursue a creative career?
Honestly I didn’t go to art school, take special art classes or want to be a painter. It all just happened. Professionally I come from a background in medical and pharmaceutical research. Science has its own way in being creative. I just didn’t know at the time that my creative purpose was not in the physical sciences, it was in the visual arts. I also have an innate ability in the spiritual sciences so as my abilities in this field blossomed more and I further expanded with my study I started interpreting my experiences and evolution spiritually with paint. It has become a form of spiritual communication and storytelling within this prompted endeavor. Now visual art has taken over my life and is just something I can’t stop doing.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My path hasn’t been easy to have gotten where I am today in my art career. The subject matter in spiritual practices and ideas that I paint can be taboo and also challenging for others to take in. Then again isn’t art all about crossing social boundaries? My art has substance and is not empty within it’s execution. This can also challenge perspectives on personal beliefs and values. I stay true to myself and art, this has never failed me. However, I must say there was a short period when I steered away from focusing on my art style to simply sell art. Doing commercial abstract art for businesses and couch decorations really stole my heart and integrity as an artist. This has taught me the fundamentals of why I even do art and how I can challenge others and myself to look past what we see.
It’s an interesting story of how I got here today and a rather long story indeed. To sum it up it was created by failure in my life, tribulations, pain of living the human experience, and the drive to ascend as a human physically and spiritually. All of these things are what have opened doors for me to explore more of myself and the purpose of my existence. It’s amazing the things that can happen in your life when you open yourself to a higher standard, perspective of understanding others, and yourself. Know thy self! It’s the key to all manifestations and desires I have experienced.
Last year I was grateful to have been able to participate in the Florence Biennial in Florence, Italy to exhibit my art. I also have received a couple international awards for my art along with a few publications in international art books. These books can be found in museums and bookstores across the world.
Currently I am working on a book of art, poetry and dark philosophy. It’s based on a character I have created. This plays out a story and writings of my personal initiation into the current process of my artistic and spiritual development and transformation. It’s also a creation out of my love for art and appreciation to my spirit guides and teachers. This in itself has been a challenge to me. It is challenging my self confidence, insecurities and comfort levels with exposing myself in clear real time.
I look forward to meeting new people along this spiritual path and artistic journey. Nuturing already established relationships and to create an impact in this world. An impact that gives immortality to my lessons learned and to the spirits who have helped me along the way.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I could suggest a week long vacation here in Arizona I would definitely start in the Petrified Forest and then secondly the Grand Canyon. I would follow that into the beautiful red rocks of Sedona. Bisbee is another good place worth visiting and is a cute little town. We have several restaurants within Maricopa county that are really great. A restaurant I would suggest is Fabio on Fire. It’s outstanding and the owner Fabio is the cook. He is from Italy and is an amazing chef. A real authentic experience of Italy’s food. A must!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Goodness! I do have my own shoutouts in all my areas of artistic expression and specialists in the arts of spirituality. As far as being a painter I only have my admirations and musings, it comes from my spiritual connections and my interactions with the spirit realm. Oddly enough they are my guide in technique,
A shoutout to my teachers that I have found to have helped me develop more in my field I would definitely say Stephanie Connolly and Jason Miller. They are great humans and experts in their fields. I cannot thank them enough for all the knowledge they have shared and have taught me.
