We had the good fortune of connecting with Jackie Centrella and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jackie, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Starting my own business came naturally to me because my father is an entrepreneur. He raised me to think outside the box. If you are good at something, and passionate about it, why not do it yourself? Working for yourself is one of the greatest paths you can take in life. It is a TON of work, but has a huge payoff if done correctly. America thrives on entrepreneurs!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Centrella Candles is unique in that it is a safe and clean candle for all to enjoy! Many commercial candles are filled with toxic chemicals that are burnt into the atmosphere, including lead in the wick, phthalates in the fragrance, and petroleum in the wax. My midwives educated me on the fact that many common household items are not good for us and our babies. I took a hard look at all the ingredients I was putting on and around my baby and quickly made a lifestyle makeover. I got rid of all of my toxic candles first, and started making my own. And that’s how Centrella Candles was born! I pride myself in using only American made 100% Soy Wax, Non-toxic fragrance and an all cotton wick. I also use all recyclable and compostable labels and packaging.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Arizona has some of the most amazing places to take anyone who is visiting town! Sedona has breathtaking hikes and trails that include creeks and swimming. The Hudson is a great place for lunch with fantastic views of the red rocks! Scottsdale is a culinary wonderland. Maple & Ash is a new fine dining steakhouse with a sassy attitude! After dinner, the nightlife scene right up the road is a main attraction, definitely try Bottled Blonde! In Phoenix, Saturday mornings are for the Uptown Farmers Market! Pick up some locally grown produce and locally handcrafted goodies! A lazy swim at the Sanctuary overlooking Paradise Valley would top off the weekend nicely! Maybe a spa day included?

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My daughter is the driving force behind me starting my own business. I had just given birth, and I wanted to still feel connected to my community from home. I decided early on that in order to be the kind of mom I wanted to be, I wasn’t going back to work so I developed my own company, Centrella Candles. I was able to stay home with my infant, and still have an income. The support and encouragement from my friends and family is what jumpstarted my hobby into an actual business. First it was social media and word of mouth, then I started working small local markets, and when COVID hit, I opened up an Etsy shop! I believe everything happens for a reason, and my Etsy shop has been the most successful!
