We had the good fortune of connecting with James Gordon Patterson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi James Gordon, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I couldn’t draw worth a darn. I got interested in digital photography in the early 2000’s. I was what is called an early adopter. I was forced to take a photojournalism class as part of my journalism major years ago. I say “forced” because I was a radio reporter, so why did I need a photo-j class? But digital meant NO CHEMICALS! I was already computer literate, so digital photography appealed to me. Then I had to learn how to be an artist. I’m still learning through webinars and books and organizations.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m retired so I have an income. I get most satisfaction photographing event like country concerts and rodeos, then entering contests and WINNING!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Easy! About ten miles from me is the town of Cave Creek. We’d go to the cowboy bars and watch bull riding. Then we’d go in March to the Cave Creek Rodeo. Often they’ll have a country act after the rodeo so that combines two kinds of events I love to photograph!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The Kelby One group and how helpful they’ve been in online and in person photography workshops over the years! I miss the live in person Photoshop World!
