We had the good fortune of connecting with Jamie Killin and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jamie, Let’s talk about principles and values – what matters to you most?
The principle that matters most to me is integrity and a commitment to my values – the top ones being honesty and kindness. When I’m faced with difficult times or big decisions, I’m able to act with integrity by deciding how to move forward with as much honesty and kindness as possible. It also helps me to know that even if I make a mistake, or face a setback, if I know I was acting in integrity I was doing the best I could.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a publicist as well as a freelance writer – this allows me to be on both sides of the media landscape and gives me a unique perspective on both, which I like to think makes me a stronger professional. It certainly hasn’t been easy – while I feel fortunate to have been able to grow steadily over the last nearly seven years in the public relations field it hasn’t come without trial and error! Finding the right agency, client mix and role for me has been a journey and I’m so happy with where I am now! With writing, every day is a challenge because I have to make my own connections at publications, pitch my story ideas and adapt to new writing styles. 2020 was especially difficult as I lost many of my most consistent clients. I knew I could either accept defeat and lean into the imposter syndrome I felt around being a writer, or come back stronger and keep trying. I decided to keep trying and ended up bringing on two new clients that allowed me to write about travel for national outlets – a huge goal of mine I might not have otherwise pushed myself so hard to achieve if it hadn’t been for the initial setback.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
There are so many amazing places I love in Scottsdale! For food, I love Kaleidoscope Juice’s smoothies, Toca Madera for a fun night out, Bertha’s for a quick and delicious lunch and Mastro’s or Maple & Ash for a great steak. I also love hiking at the Gateway trailhead, taking a spin class at The Madison and shopping at Kierland and Scottsdale Quarter. I’m also a huge fan of Arizona’s art scene and loving stopping by the Phoenix Art Museum or SMoCA.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are so many people I can thank for my current successes! My parents are both extremely supportive and always encourage me to be myself. I also have a great group of friends who read my work, support my PR clients, hype up my creative pursuits and make me feel like I can do anything. Of course, I have also had so many great bosses and mentors over the years that have helped me grow in the media industry.
