We had the good fortune of connecting with Jason Costello and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jason, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Managing risk is the number one thing I do. We have to take them and we have to embark on projects with unknown outcomes, but I have to be aware of the downside. I spent almost 15 years in industrial safety, my mom was a Risk Manager and my Dad was a Commanding Officer in the US Coast Guard. s you might say Risk is in my blood.

We currently have one minority partner who is non responive unsupportive and generally relies on what I would say is poor legal council. You cant take quite the same level of risk in that environment.

I have a modicum of vision which is to say I can connect some dots and I feel pretty good about plotting a trajectory without knowing exactly how each dot will connect. as the project unfolds. For the most part I am placing bets I can afford to lose and I become almost hyper vigilant on the ones I cannot afford to lose. Picking and choosing your shots and when to take them is a function of knowing yourself, your team and your resources. That will be different for everyone.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
We walk a line across several cultures and communities in our region. Canyon is a collective reflection of the regions influences. We are not just hunting, whitewater, or even camping. We are neither woke or tacti-cool, but we do want to see the people around us and include them in our tapestry. Canyon has an opportunity to authentically reflect our region and provide some practical inclusivity.

One of the more rewarding projects lately was our Artist Series of Drinkware. We recruit up and coming artists and provide a canvas on our drinkware. They receive a great commission and in turn we provide an artist bio and links to the work in every bottle. Native tribes want to be seen just like we all do. We also have pieces by female naturalists an others. Providing that platform for them to reach new clients and touch more people has been super rewarding.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
In no particular orders ID start with food and beverage. Mother Road and Historic for great beer. Martanne’s for Mexican Breakfast, Provisions for lunch, Annex for cocktails and appetizers. HIgh Country Motor Lodge als makes a great cocktail.

Flagstaff being that quintessential mountain town has something for anyone. An observatory for the nerds, a ski facility, mountain bike trails, trails in general, not to mention the Cinders a great OHV area. We are surrounded by volcanoes and Indian ruins. The OVerland Expo is also allot of fun in the summer.

Just outside of Flagstaff, well a wonder of the world awaits in a place we sometimes call the Big Ditch (Grand Canyon). Sedona is world class for its vistas and trails. SInce tehre is so much elevation change we can pick an adventure based on the desired temperature. There is world class outdoor location literally surrounding us in all directions. One can explore slot canyons, kayak the Colorado river, find petroglyphs, The area is amazing.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The connections we have made are a daily reminder the business is really about people, and people are about relationships.

I have been fortunate in that my employees really want to be here. They share a passion, The community of Flagstaff is much the same way. We all pay a price for not being in a more vibrant business center but we have creativity and purpose that sometimes gets lost in metro areas. We cannot throw a rock without being inspired by the gorgeous environment we live in, without hitting a photographer or without striking someone that cares to see us succeed.

Arizona has also embraced us in that we have been blessed to work with media like Arizona Highways, State Agencies like Arizona Game and Fish and a multitude of conservation groups all around us. As we support them they have supported us. To be seen and heard by folks doing amazing work is its own success.

Lastly but most importantly is our client base. We see over and over and over again they are buying 2, 3, or 4 coolers and circling back for drinkware. We have been blessed by a loyal following that wants to see us succeed. They seem to appreciate what we are trying to do whether its a great warranty, a design feature or just offering a high level of service. The vast majority of our clients really appreciate us, and we couldn’t be more grateful.
