Meet Jeffrey Wu

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jeffrey Wu and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jeffrey, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
For me, the most important factor behind your success is never to stop trying new approaches to the same subjects; every year I will make myself a new assignment to focus on. In the digital era, keeping the status quo will be left behind.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My work can be simply described as “Action-packed, story-telling authentic wildlife photography with an artistic flare”, what sets my work apart from the others is I hardly photograph the portraits of species, because those are a penny a dozen. If I would photograph a portrait of a bird, for instance, that must be a fish in its talon or a lizard in its beak. Without describing its behaviors, showing its mood, or its living conditions an animal portrait is merely an insert of a dictionary. Try to google” cheetah” in images, there are about 20 million similar images pop up, you can not tell one from the other, but the cheetah images I attached here are the ones that can wow the viewers. Never stop pursuing extraordinary action shots is what gets me where I am today and what I am most proud of. It was not easy but I believe in first-hand work, so I spent 10 months per year for the past 10 years photographing in the field of Africa, leading tours and doing assignments,
especially during the Covid period, I never left Kenya for 3 years and spent 905 working days photographing wildlife mainly in Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya. And I got thousands of great images as a reward.
I want the world to know me as “the photographer who takes action shots to tell a nature story”
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
The only place I would show anyone a great time is Masai Mara National Reserve, Kenya. Stay inside the camps of Reserve, doing game drives in the early morning and the evening. Drinking Gin/tonic while watching a splendid African sunset; driving through the grassland and thicket, encountering wildlife up close and personal, getting to know them, knowing their behavior, and challenges they are facing, appreciating their beauty and how they are roaming the land freely. Get to know the lion pride, cheetahs leopards, and how they search, stalk, and hunt their prey. watch from 2 meters away how an elephant peels off the bark of tree branches, or how a baby giraffe suckles milk. Check out The Great Migration in August, and witness the most spectacular natural wonder of tens of thousands of wildebeests and zebras crossing the Mara River, It will leave you speechless.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There is one most influential book that sparked my passion for nature and wildlife photography is The Art of Photographing Nature by Art Wolfe.
