We had the good fortune of connecting with Jenn Hanson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jenn, is there a quote or affirmation that’s meaningful to you?
My favorite affirmation is, “I choose the thoughts that create my future.” It is from a meditation app by Louise Hay that I use when practicing mindfulness and self-care. Although I cannot control things that happen to me, the affirmation reminds me that I do have control over my personal outlook and perspective. Choosing positivity influences the way I perceive those events. It is helpful when I feel overwhelmed.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a self-taught candle maker. I learned how to make candles by watching YouTube videos and reading blogs. My candles stand out from the big manufacturers because they are handmade and perform better. I did a lot of research and practice to get where I am today. Running a side business outside of my career as a lawyer has been challenging, but I enjoy learning and trying new things. It makes me push myself to do what I believe in.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take a friend to Spoke & Wherl for Saturday night team trivia. For restaurants, I would recommend Culinary Dropout at The Yard and Aunt Chiladas. If we were to take a day trip, we would go to DA Ranch in Cornville. We would also try to see a Broadway musical at ASU Gammage.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My husband, Doug, for loving me and supporting me and my projects. Tara Schmeling and Francesca Bessett, good friends of mine and entrepreneurs who also promote my candles.
