We had the good fortune of connecting with Jodi and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jodi, do you have some perspective or insight you can share with us on the question of when someone should give up versus when they should keep going?
As an independent artist, it’s easy to want to give up. Navigating the industry alone can be pretty challenging and overwhelming at times. But I listen to people’s success stories and they all have one thing in common. All my favorite artists pushed through adversity and hard times to get where they are. The kind of success I’m looking for won’t be handed to me and I remember that when I get down so I keep going.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m a singer but I also produce my own music. I grew up playing classical and jazz piano and I think that’s what sets me apart the most. I’ve fused all my influences of jazz, hip-hop, & r&b to create my own lane. A great example of this is my new single “Dangerous”. I’m super excited about this one, the video especially. I started my career in Seattle, WA and I learned a lot out there about watching who you work with and give your money to. Not everyone has good intentions and sometimes people don’t really treat you well until you have 10,000+ followers. That was really hard for me, knowing that I’m talented and worthy, but not being treated as such because I didn’t have clout. So I do most everything by myself now. I record at home with my fiance and we shoot my videos together.
I want the world to know that I’m working hard to bring R&B back. I’m working hard to bring real music back.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m new here but so far I’d say go eat at J&G Steakhouse in Scottsdale. It was delicious. Zen Thai Cafe in Phoenix was great too. I also hear Loyalty Lounge is a great place to hang out and I plan on performing at open mic night at Poetic Soul.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to give a shoutout to K.O.S. My engineer, business partner, and most importantly fiance. He records, mixes, and masters my music. He shoots and edits my videos, and without him I probably would have given up by now. To say he’s lightened the load is an understatement. He’s the best.
