We had the good fortune of connecting with Victor Jao and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Victor, have you ever found yourself in a spot where you had to decide whether to give up or keep going? How did you make the choice?
Giving up is never an option. If you ever want something, you have to go get it without looking back. You don’t wanna regret over time about not trying.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a Performance DJ from Cebu, Philippines. Started DJing when I was 16 and then professionally when I was 17. Of course it wasn’t easy. The early struggles of learning and criticisms kinda hits you roughly. I was rejected a lot of times for being too young and that I lacked the experience to perform for a crowd, however I was given the chance to play on off days like Sundays, Mondays and Tuesdays where my dad would drive me to the club since I was too young to get a driver’s license and I would end up playing for my dad and the waiters late at night. I didn’t see this as an obstacle but saw it as a lot of room for growth instead. It takes one step at a time to get what you want and to achieve your goal no matter how slow. The next 9 years after beginnings like that took me around the country to perform in various music festivals and even once internationally over there in Guam. It was crazy to think from playing for 5 people to 10,000 people in so many occasions afterwards. So the lesson here is to never give up on things that you really want.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take them to the beach because I live in a tropical city, and take them out to a lot of local food shops. Here in Cebu, Philippines we are all about our food and you can definitely feel our culture with each bite. A drive into the mountains is only an hour away and you get to see the best view of the city. The local nightlife scene is also something to look forward to because us Cebuanos know how to have fun and turn 9pm nights to 6am mornings real quick!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
It would be my family. They are the best support system I’ve ever had since day 1..
