We had the good fortune of connecting with Jodie Filogomo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jodie, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I’ve always been a woman that enjoys helping others. You wouldn’t think that of a dentist, but my goal for patients was to give them a wonderful smile and realize how important their mouth health affected their entire health. When I sold my practice, I thought I wanted to be a personal shopper because I love shopping for clothes. In the meantime, I decided to start my blog, Jodie’s Touch of Style, where I could even showcase my mother and stepmom.
It began my motto of showing how it’s never too late to look great. As visual animals, the way we dress can be very powerful to how others treat us and how we feel about ourselves.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
One of my superpowers is getting creative with our clothes and making them more versatile than we think. As an influencer, I don’t believe we have to buy new things all the time. Instead, I appreciate the idea of making our clothing work for different occasions and even changing the item into a different item. For example, some of our tops can be transformed into infinity scarves just by not placing your arms in the sleeves.
The challenge for me has been to break the fashion rules that we have been brought up with and get women to realize that we are perfectly imperfect. The fact that older women’s bodies are changing should not be a bad thing. If we could only embrace the changes instead of being embarrassed by them, we would be much happier.
In fact, I just had a woman comment on Instagram saying, “listening to you in the last year has made a positive impression on me. All of a sudden, I’ve started going sleeveless again. Now I think how crazy that I even bought into that ‘thing’ about being too old or hiding parts of myself because of society’s standards.”
That in a nutshell is my goal. We are all beautiful and learning to dress the way we want becomes very freeing. And learning NOT to judge others (or ourselves) so harshly is part of that.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Since moving to Arizona 3 years ago, we have explored so much of this fabulous state.
First and foremost, everyone should see the Grand Canyon since it is one of the 7 natural wonders of the world. When we visited, we found it ideal to enter on the East side and drive ourselves along the road so we could stop at our leisure. Then when we ended up at the South entrance in the late afternoon when it wasn’t crowded, and we could watch the sunset.
Another favorite place to take guests is the Desert Botanical Garden. You really get an appreciation of how beautiful the desert can be no matter what season.
Then a tour of the Biltmore Hotel or Taliesin West gives our friends some great history of this wonderful state.
Alongside the fabulous places to explore is my husband’s favorite pizza place, Pizzeria Bianco.
Since we live in the West Valley, we also take all of our guests to Park West for some great grub at Jalapeno Inferno, Hash Kitchen, and/or Pita Jungle.
We live in Sun City retirement community, so no visit is complete without a tour around our iconic area. The mid-century architecture and style are so prevalent. Plus in the spring and fall, we get free concerts at the Sun Bowl.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Oh, there are a ton of others that deserve a shoutout in relation to my success. First off, my mother, my stepmom, and now my friend, Lesley as they all model for my blog at times to showcase all ages of women, all shapes of women, and different styles on women.
Then there is my husband who takes our photos and schleps us around to all of the places we take photos and videos.
But what makes it all worth it are the emails and testimonials from women all over the world who read my blog and have been changed by it.
