We had the good fortune of connecting with John Carpino and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi John, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Well, performing live music was always my “second job” – 2 or 3 nights a week. I knew becoming a full time performing musician would be a risk. I feel blessed to have found a wonderful outdoor venue in Northern Arizona which has live music 7 nights a week (plus lunches). I have performed all over Arizona and beyond – primarily as a solo/acoustic act – and this venue is most definitely my favorite. I meet people from all over the world, courtesy of the Grand Canyon, and I am proud to say that I have sold CD’s to six continents and 40+ countries! I’ve learned to say “Thank you” and “Welcome” in 10 or 11 languages.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I absolutely love performing live, but my true passion is the art of songwriting. I’ve compiled a catalog of songs that is both prolific and diverse. I feel fortunate to be able to present my songs in a live setting.

I also find great joy in working in the studio – I’ve released 6 albums of original material along with numerous side projects. My song “Rock and Roll Highway” reached the number 1 position on the independent charts, nationally.

One project that I was honored and humbled to be a part of was “Ballads of Honor – Korea”, a tribute CD to the veterans of the Korean War. These powerful ballads were written by Frank G. Gross while he was recovering from frostbite, a concussion and shrapnel wounds after fighting in the epic battle of the Chosin Reservoir in Korea, 1950. I was recruited to co-write, arrange, perform and produce the album. This album, along with many other historical military songs I’ve produced is now in the Smithsonian National Museum.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
When my friends come to visit we make it a point to see sunrise at the Grand Canyon. Of course this involves an early wake up, around 4:30 – but it’s worth it! Of course we would have to make a stop at Bearizona – what a great place!

I would encourage an evening stroll along Route 66 in downtown Williams. You will meet people from all over the world and all walks of life.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to send a shout out and THANK YOU to my amazing wife of 33 years – Luann Carpino! She has supported and endured my crazy decision to become a full time performing musician. She is also an amazing vocalist, keyboardist and harmony singer – we perform as a duo and “front” our band, John Carpino and the HOT Cappuccinos.
