We had the good fortune of connecting with Jonah Mitchell and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jonah, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I worked for a couple different big box gyms before I started my own business.

It’s very difficult getting started in those gyms when you’re still learning the knowledge of helping someone get to their dream results. While at the same time, trying to understand how to build your own business in those environments as well.

I had found a passion with coaching that I didn’t know was there. I became obsessed with helping people realize how capable they really are and that passion kept me coming back for more even though it was one of the most difficult jobs I had ever done. My passion was often shot down by higher ups who were more interested in how many sessions my clients had left so I could resign them.

Too many times I was asked “what’s the next package you’re going to sell” and not, “how are your clients progressing?”.

So when I set out to create my own business, my goal was to do the exact opposite.

Build something entirely centered around the person/people right in front of me. Meet them where they’re at, help them understand themselves better than they ever have before, and celebrate every aspect of their journey along the way.

While teaching them how to maintain their results for the rest of their lives, without the need of a coach if they so choose.

It has allowed me to show up as my authentic self through the ups and the downs of this journey and I’ve loved every second of it.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Losing weight, living a healthy lifestyle, improving your relationships with food all starts in the same place. The thing that sits between your ears. So I like to think my business stands out because it connects your mind to your body. I apply a lot of behavioral psychology and mindset coaching to help connect the dots of why a person may have struggled for the vast majority of their life with their health. We then address those behaviors first so that the person stops unknowingly sabotaging their journey, which makes their their journey incredibly simple. The entire time they’re making progress, it doesn’t feel like strict dieting or unrealistic exercise regiments anymore because we start from the inside out. All while teaching the person how to keep the results so they don’t need me anymore.

Building my business has been one of the most challenging things I’ve ever done. The many challenges I’ve faced were often ones I created myself. Imposter syndrome, for constantly comparing myself to the coaches around me and making myself feel inadequate to even do this job. Complacency, finding some success within business marketing and not doing everything I could to keep the momentum going. Often times making me feel like I’m starting over. Procrastination with certain things that I do not enjoy doing. It’s like any job, you’ll love things about it and strongly dislike other things. And maybe one one of the most important ones being learning how to set boundaries within my relationship. My wife helped me for a long time until we found out things weren’t as aligned as we had hoped. Causing a lot of internal friction, making our relationship and the business even harder. We’ve rectified this and are doing fantastic now that she’s stepped away from the business. All of these things I learned were often just barriers I was giving myself. Which is why I love the work that I do so much because it’s the exact things I coach clients through on their journeys. So I get constant reminders to myself on how to keep showing up even when things aren’t the way the I expect. Ultimately, what I’ve learned is that it’s me vs me, however cliche it is to say but it’s true. And as I continue to learn to understand myself better, I keep getting better at the business side that has allowed me to finally feel like I have a place in this industry.

9 times out 10, we make our journey’s a lot harder than they need to be. As I continue to help people realize weight loss is a lot simpler than they think (when they start from the inside out), I get to continue to find my own parralels in this journey I am on. I get to practice what I preach by learning how to clarify my path and get out of my own way to achieve it.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
There is so much to do in Colorado, and it definitely has to start with some great hiking. Boulder, Evergreen, Estes Park has some amazing hills and mountains that will leave you speechless at the views you can see. We’d finish things off in Denver, near the Dairy Block and Union Station, where some of the best restaurants are at. Me and my wife’s personal favorite is Kachina because of their fantastic taco’s and margaritas. Other great places like Hopdoddy Burger’s, Machete’s Mexican Grill, Wynkoop Brewerey, and even ViewHouse near the ball park for some night life fun. That’s just scratching the surface of that area, but it’s a great place to start.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d love to give a shout out to the many mentors I’ve had that have kept me going on this journey.

My Fitness Manager, Stephanie Bomberger, the one person that saved my career in health and fitness truly showing this beginner how to get his foot in the door.

My many mentors at the Nutritional Coaching Institute, Jason Philips, Travis Zipper, Caleb Fong, who gave me all the education I needed to build my own presence in this space.

And my current mentor Christy Campbell, who helps me get out of my head and execute on a regular basis who also gave me this opportunity as well.
