We had the good fortune of connecting with Catherine Kay and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Catherine, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
I think at the beginning of my journey I worked extremely long days, and never took the weekends off. I felt like that beginning grind really gave me momentum, and at the time I even had a Fulltime job and a part time job. Once I began to see traction, and my store started making steady sales and became my fulltime income, I realised I was still working extremely long hours. But rather than be productive, it was actually doing the opposite, I found myself tired, lacking creativity and burnt out. In 2022 I decided to take a step back and find some balance within my life. I’ve been trialling a 4 day workweek, It doesn’t always work out, as sometimes in Business you have to work extra hours, but I have found switching off from work has made me so so much more creative and excited again, I now feel like I have my passion back, and after my days off Im rearing to go from all the ideas I’ve had during my down time. I think being calm and taking time to rest, allows your brain to have the space to come up with new inventions, ideas and boosts it’s creativity.

The old saying goes ‘Work Smarter not harder’ and this can definitely be true. But I didn’t quite have that privilege in the early days as I needed to pay the bills, so sometimes hard work does pay off! But only if your using your time productively, the way I was working in the first few years wasn’t sustainable long term, but helped me get to where I am today. I now feel privileged to take weekends off, but I have to be very sensible and smart with my time and productivity if I want to achieve my goals!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I have had a passion for art and design for as long as I can remember. There are images of me at 4 years old, with my new drawing desk, a yellow and red tubbed desk that could store all my art supplies in, scribbling away with my brightly coloured markers!

Growing up I found a love for all things cute and kawaii, a Huge fan of pop culture I consumed anime, comics and games and always felt inspired and in awe of the bright colours and filled with joy at the cute characters or amazing storytelling.

I never believed I would be able to make a living combining all these things together, yet here I am! Slowly creating a magical whimsical world filled with cute characters and bright colours, a safe space for people to enjoy smile and have child-like wonder all over again!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Our Studio overlooks a wonderful stretch of beach here in the UK, I would take them for a stroll across it’s golden sands where we could watch the sunset and treat them to a local icecream delicacy the “Lemon top” a creamy ice cream on a sugar cone topped with a sweet and zingy lemon Sorbet!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to say a huge shoutout to my team and My wonderful Husband. I couldn’t do this without them!
