Meet Josh Kasselman | Director

We had the good fortune of connecting with Josh Kasselman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Josh, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My wife and creative partner, Stephanie Lucas, and I had been making short films and documentaries for a few years and loving that. Meanwhile, I was toiling away as a freelance corporate copywriter and suffering major burnout in that arena. It dawned on me that I could start to purchase more and better video equipment if I could use it to make some money, then slowly transition into a new career. Within a year or so I had some regular clients and felt like it was a good time to incorporate and make video production a full-time endeavor.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
While we produce lots of commercial and nonprofit video at Limitrophe Films, our first love will always be film — specifically documentary. I think what sets all of our work apart is that interest in fly-on-the-wall scenes and moments. We’re always trying to find ways to get that authenticity into every project. Calling that our “brand” doesn’t feel right, but it’s certainly the place we’re coming from.
One of the biggest challenges we’ve faced has been producing a documentary feature that was supposed to be a one-year project and, a decade later, is finally in the last stages of editing. I think that’s a testament to our not wanting to force the story, but thanks to Stephanie’s vision and persistence, we’re on the verge of releasing a a really meaningful film.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Hiking in the Superstitions, a visit to Boyce-Thompson Arboretum, Japanese Friendship Garden, a Suns’ game… Jewel’s Bakery and Cafe, gluten-free pizza at Cibo, coffee at Valentine.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
IFP Phoenix (Independent Feature Project Phoenix) supports and develops the growth of independent filmmaking in Arizona through education, networking, exhibition, and filmmaking opportunities.
