We had the good fortune of connecting with Julian Hill and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Julian, what principle do you value most?
It seems really cliche, but hard work pays off. Competitive swimming is definitely one of the more time-consuming sports out there. There have been so many opportunities I have missed out on over the years due to training, or competitions. Swimming has taught me a great deal of discipline and attention-to-detail. Through this relentless dedication I have bettered myself as a person and met lifelong friends.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am not yet in the professional world, but I have been able to have some high-pressure situations that I assume may be similar. Like stated previously, swimming is not an easy sport. Training roughly 20 hours a week throughout much of high school and all of college have led to great discipline and time management.

Juggling athletics while being a full-time student is a tall task, in and of itself. Doing both of these things at a high-level is even harder. After graduating undergrad, I enrolled in graduate school and am currently in the Master of Legal Studies program at the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law at Arizona State. Additionally, I have been working with the Landscape Ecology and Sustainability Lab at Arizona State and am working to submit journal article to a publisher. None of this could have been done without my upbringing and practicing time-management over the years.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Arizona is a really cool state. I think it is quite under-rated, especially by those that live on the East Coast (where I grew up). If I had a week to show my best friend around, the first part of the trip would surely be up north. Grand Canyon, Flagstaff, Sedona and Payson would all be on the itinerary. The Tonto Natural Land Bridge State Park would be on the itinerary as well. With the valley having so many things to do, the second half of the trip would be here. For activities, I would take them to climb Camelback, climb “A Mountain”, explore Papago Park and Tempe Town Lake, and maybe take them golfing at one of the many golf courses here. For restaurants, they would have to try Chelsea’s Kitchen, Taco Boys, Pizzeria Bianco, or Postino.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have to thank and recognize my parents. Nothing that I have accomplished today could have been done without them. The fundamentals they taught me, the foundation they laid and the freedom they gave me to grow have all been huge for me. The only thing they ever pushed me to do were things that I loved and I was passionate about. Yet, they really instilled the importance of being well-rounded into my upbringing.
