Meet Julie Ann Mulkay | Photographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Julie Ann Mulkay and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Julie Ann, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
The goal was to be able to work and earn a living where I could still be a mother/wife and take care of my home, and family. Being a photographer fills me creatively and I can also use it to help my own family. As I was trying to figure out what to major in way back when, my school counselor would say, “Where are your grades at? Where you are doing best in your classes, is where you should major.” I was a straight A student! I was still unsure of what to do. My mother advised me to do something that would bring me joy. I got into every California University I applied to. California Polytechnic State University would not let me fill in “undecided” for the application, so I selected Art and Design with a concentration in photography. They required a portfolio. I said, “If they accept me, then I will go.” They did accept me and that started me down the road toward starting my own business one day.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My style is bright and uplifting. I love classic and clean images. I take am great with details, and love to bring background, lighting, clothing and posing all together. I absolutely love photographing babies, children and high school seniors. There is something about working with the one. My motto is “One Birth, One Life, Countless Joys!” Each tiny person that comes into this world is all their own. And each family has the privilege of watching their little person grow. Within that one life are innumerable joys.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Oh this is easy, I would take them to Pomo Pizzeria in Scottsdale and Luna Gelateria next door. Our little family lived in Italy for 4 years. My twins were 16 months old and my daughter 3, when we moved there. So we love Italian food and know quality and authenticity. My little boy loves to order pasta pomodoro (spaghetti with marinera sauce). In fact when we got back to the states, he was so surprised that not every restaurant had pasta pomodoro. We go to Pomo and he feels at home. And we always get a scoop of gelato!
For Mexican food, I like Blanco Cocina + Cantina. I am half Mexican and grew up eating amazing Mexican food. Both of my parents cooked, and they even own a restaurant now in another State. I love eating at Blanco’s because it is a fusion of traditional and modern flavors.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My family. My mom was there from the very beginning. My husband became my lighting guy on family photoshoots and teases that he should have a minor in photography for all the work he has done! He is a great support taking our kids when I have a session that does not require his help. My children because they were my first little models. I was a stay-at-home mom until they started school, and I was always photographing them! I have a daughter and twin boys. They are used to being in front of the camera. They even pray for me and my husband that we will do well at work. My bestie from college encouraged me to keep learning and to be current with my education. It took time for me to get here with my business and my people where supportive along the way.
