We had the good fortune of connecting with Kalin Harding and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kalin, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I worked in a retail health clinic for about 4 years and I was surprised with how many patients complained about being assigned a provider through their insurance companies, but the provider never had time for the patient. Even for acute things the patients were frustrated in their provider’s lack of time and effort in getting their patient’s needs met. So, the Direct Patient Care or (DPC) Model really appealed to me and my business partner and we opened Surprise Care April 1st, 2019.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Surprise Care is a Direct Patient Care or (DPC) Medical Clinic sometimes called “Concierge Medicine”. This model is similar in a way to a gym membership; in return for a small monthly fee of $59 (per adult) patients have an “all -access- pass” to their medical provider with no worry of a co-pay or deductible. Patients can text their provider with questions or needs during off-hours saving them time and money. This sets Surprise Care apart from the others in that patients never have to worry about not getting their needs met. We at Surprise Care are most proud of our ability to make healthcare both affordable and accessible. Surprise Care is a thriving, successful business that just celebrated its 2 year anniversary. Nothing has come easy, Over 50% of small business fail within the first year, but with hard work and determination we have overcome the odds to not only survive but thrive. We have learned that most of our business comes from word of mouth (even though we have spent thousands in advertising!). We want the world to know that it is possible to follow your dreams, stay focused, and press on. Surprise Care wants the world to know that the DPC model is here to stay and if you haven’t heard about Surprise Care, you will.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Arizona has so much to offer! The City of Surprise is loaded with parks, baseball fields, and great restaurants to enjoy. If I had a friend visiting for a week I would take them hiking in The White Tank Mountain National Park, then the next few days go north to see Sedona. After that, spend some time enjoying the shopping in downtown Scottsdale, and (depending on the week that they visit) maybe even to see a Kansas City Chiefs Baseball game. The most fun and interesting things to do are often just exploring the dessert and seeing what this awesome landscape has to offer!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Getting a master’s degree in nursing is one of the hardest degrees you can earn, and both my husband and I have completed this degree while holding jobs and caring for young kids. So, a lot of credit goes to our parents who supported and encouraged us through school and in our business ventures.
