We had the good fortune of connecting with Karen May Hangar Girl and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Karen May, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
There came a moment in my life — one I’ll never forget — when I realized that life is simply too short to spend all my time building success for others without contributing to something greater. That awakening changed everything.

Today, I have the freedom to choose the industries I engage in, the services I provide, and most importantly, the causes I support. I’ve built my business with purpose, not just profit, at its core. And while I’m proud of the work I do, I’m even more proud of what that work allows me to give back.

For me, money has never been the ultimate motivator. My true passion lies in using my time, energy, and resources to make a difference — to create a better world for those in need. Building my own company has given me the flexibility and autonomy to do just that. I’ve designed systems and schedules that not only support my clients, but also honor the way I work best — with focus, intention, and room to serve others.

This freedom has allowed me to invest deeply in the causes that matter most to me. I’ve been fortunate to support a range of initiatives, including advocacy for seniors, assistance for veterans, efforts to combat human trafficking, and perhaps closest to my heart — animal rescue. Each of these causes speaks to my values and fuels my desire to leave the world better than I found it.

Choosing to do it my way hasn’t always been easy, but it’s been incredibly fulfilling. It’s a path that’s allowed me to align my professional life with my personal mission, and that alignment is where I’ve found true success.

In the end, my greatest achievement isn’t just the business I’ve built — it’s the life I’ve designed, one grounded in freedom, purpose, and service.

“Money has never been my driving force; my true passion lies in creating a better world for those in need. The freedom to choose where to invest my time and energy has allowed me to follow my passions more independently and meaningfully.” — Karen L. May

What should our readers know about your business?
Leading with Purpose, Built by Experience, my story isn’t one of overnight success — it’s one of resilience, growth, and the kind of wisdom that only comes from truly living and learning. I’ve spent my career building a business rooted in people, trust, and transformation — not just for clients, but for myself, too.

What sets me apart is the ability to blend intuition with strategy, warmth with results, and insight with action. Whether I’m consulting, mentoring, or leading teams, I bring a calm, grounded presence that helps people cut through the noise and focus on what really matters. I’ve learned that success isn’t about having all the answers — it’s about asking the right questions, staying curious, and staying committed. What Sets Scottsdale Private Event Venues Apart
At Scottsdale Private Event Venues (SPEV), we don’t just host events — we create unforgettable experiences rooted in exclusivity, creativity, and seamless execution.

What sets us apart is simple: we run the venues. Unlike most event planners who rely on public spaces or third-party rentals, we offer access to a carefully curated portfolio of private, one-of-a-kind venues — from stylish airplane hangars and art-filled warehouses to chic outdoor desert settings you won’t find on any typical venue list. This gives our clients an unmatched level of privacy, customization, and wow-factor for corporate events, galas, private parties, and brand activations.

But space alone isn’t what makes us special — it’s what we do with it.

We bring decades of hospitality, logistics, and production experience to the table. Our team has an exceptional reputation for delivering high-touch service, tailored design, and event coordination that feels effortless to the client — because behind the scenes, every detail has been anticipated. We know that trust, discretion, and results matter. That’s why planners, corporations, and high-end clients return to us year after year.

What we’re most proud of? That Scottsdale Private Event Venues has become the go-to resource for those looking to escape the cookie-cutter ballroom and give their guests something bold, fresh, and completely unforgettable — with no compromises.

At the heart of it, we don’t just offer venues. We offer vision — and the expertise to bring it to life flawlessly.

My business was born out of the understanding that people crave authentic connection — in work, in life, and in leadership. I don’t just help clients grow revenue or brand presence; I help them align with their values, communicate clearly, and lead with confidence. That’s where the breakthroughs happen.

Was the journey easy? Absolutely not. I’ve faced seasons of doubt, reinvention, and steep learning curves. There were times I had to start over, dig deep, and rebuild not just my work, but my self-belief. But every challenge taught me something invaluable: how to trust my instincts, how to speak up for what I believe in, and how to keep going even when the path wasn’t clear.

Those lessons shaped not just the way I lead, but the way I live. They taught me the power of boundaries, the importance of listening — and most importantly, that there is strength in vulnerability. Growth rarely looks like a straight line. It looks like courage, like late nights, like trying again when you could’ve walked away. And I’m proud of every step it took to get here.

Today, I stand on a foundation built from hard-earned experience and unwavering values. My greatest joy comes from seeing others thrive — whether it’s a client stepping into their potential, a team member discovering their voice, or a business finding its rhythm.

What I want the world to know about me is simple: I lead with heart, I work with purpose, and I believe in the quiet power of showing up — again and again, with clarity, compassion, and commitment.

When I look back on my career, what fills me with the most pride isn’t just the milestones, titles, or accolades — it’s the legacy of relationships, integrity, and impact I’ve built along the way.

I’m proud that I’ve been able to grow a career and a business on my own terms — grounded in values, driven by purpose, and always centered on people. I’ve had the privilege of creating experiences that bring people together, designing events that leave lasting impressions, and building a reputation as someone who shows up with professionalism, creativity, and heart.

But above all, I’m proud of the consistency. Through changing industries, challenges, and personal reinvention, I never lost sight of who I am or what I stand for. I’ve stayed true to my standards, my passion for hospitality, and my belief that excellence and empathy go hand in hand.

I’m also incredibly proud of the trust others have placed in me — clients, colleagues, and community leaders who have looked to me not only for results but for leadership. That trust is earned, not given, and it’s something I’ve never taken for granted.

And perhaps most meaningfully, I’m proud to have mentored and supported others along the way — helping them find their footing, find their voice, and rise in their own right. That kind of quiet influence is, to me, the true measure of success.

This is more than my business. It’s my legacy in motion.

Why I Chose to Join — and Devote Over 30 Years to — HSMAI
When I first joined HSMAI (Hospitality Sales and Marketing Association International), I sought a place to grow — professionally and personally. I wanted more than just access to events or industry news; I was seeking connection, community, and a space to contribute to something greater than myself. I found that and so much more within HSMAI.

Over the course of more than 30 years, my involvement with HSMAI has evolved from membership to active leadership — and ultimately, into a lifelong commitment to service within the organization. I’ve had the honor of serving on the board for over two decades and chairing every committee at least once during my tenure. That depth and breadth of service allowed me to experience HSMAI from every angle — not just as a member, but as a builder, a strategist, a mentor, and an advocate for excellence in hospitality.

Each committee I chaired brought a new challenge, a new team, and a new opportunity to lead. Whether I was guiding educational initiatives, shaping member engagement strategies, planning events, or driving community outreach, I approached every role with the belief that our collective work had the power to move the industry forward. I’ve always believed that leadership is not about titles — it’s about service. HSMAI gave me the platform to serve, to inspire, and to be inspired.

But what’s truly made this journey meaningful are the relationships. HSMAI has introduced me to some of the most passionate, innovative, and generous professionals in hospitality. Through years of collaboration and shared purpose, many of those colleagues became mentors, mentees, and friends. Together, we’ve built something lasting — not just in terms of programs and events, but in terms of culture and community.

Looking back, I can say without hesitation that joining HSMAI was one of the most impactful decisions of my career. It offered me a stage to grow, but also a home to return to — time and time again. The organization’s commitment to education, leadership development, and elevating the guest experience has always aligned with my personal values. That alignment is what’s kept me engaged and motivated through every board meeting, brainstorming session, and industry challenge.

Behind the scenes of every successful event, initiative, and chapter milestone, there’s Joanne — orchestrating with grace, clarity, and an unwavering dedication to excellence. She brings people together, cultivates collaboration, and fosters an environment where creativity and connection thrive. Her impact is far-reaching, and her legacy is one of true service and heart-centered leadership.

But beyond her professional achievements, Joanne is also someone I’m deeply proud to call my friend. Her warmth, loyalty, and incredible sense of humor have been a constant source of joy and strength in my life. She’s the kind of person who shows up — in business, in friendship, and in life — with intention, kindness, and a spirit that uplifts everyone around her.

Joanne, thank you for being the steadfast force behind so much of what makes our industry better — and for being the kind of friend who makes the journey brighter, more meaningful, and infinitely more fun.
