Meet Karina Castillo | Designer & Founder for “Castillo By Karina”

We had the good fortune of connecting with Karina Castillo and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Karina, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Life is about taking risks and what you do with the opportunities that arise from that.
I recall the start of my career where I was faced with a choice: a full ride to a more conventional college program or pursue an arts education that I was not sure how I would afford. I also didn’t have any knowledge of the obstacles that creatives often encounter in their careers. That was the first of many risks I’ve taken in my life. So as an early high school graduate, an opportunity I know is not afforded to many, I began my college career in what would’ve been my senior year of high school. That decision I made has now led me to create my own brand and become a designer. Looking back if I never took the plunge and followed my dreams in creating art I wouldn’t be where I am today in my career. Or the person I am today. I am a designer that has presented at Arizona Fashion Week and local runways for the past couple of seasons and I have crafted a brand that is about kindness, empowerment, and awareness for fashion. Risks can lead to opportunities, and no one should be dictating which risks you should take or how to pursue your dreams.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My designs are a reflection of my personal journey and as I continue to evolve so does my work. I am a proud Latina who delves into the colors, shapes, and rich history of my culture. I use my medium of constructing garments to celebrate my identity, and I hope to empower others to celebrate theirs as well. My intention is to grow a community centered around this messaging of empowerment and kindness through my brand. When someone wears a dress or outfit by CBK, I want them to feel like they are apart of that community. As for my design process, I never design anything without the idea of completing it as a full look. However, this can present some challenges as I am not your typical seamstress. When I am sketching, sewing, and draping I make sure that I ask myself: is this garment going to capture my message? Is it true to who I am as a designer? In addition to this, I try to be as conscious as possible and make sure that I am properly representing my Latin culture in the highest respect. I like to share my design process on my social media (@castillobykarina) and explain to my customers where the inspiration comes from for a particular collection. The possibility that someone can learn something they didn’t know before and sparking a conversation is very exciting. Of course there are challenges and a lesson I’ve learned in my career is that you can’t please everyone, but you can connect with a few and that’s much more than I could ever ask for.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I were to craft the perfect itinerary for a visitor, it would look something like this: Start your day with a delightful breakfast at Ollie Vaughn’s in Phoenix, where the food is as charming as the atmosphere. Afterward, immerse yourself in the tranquility of the Desert Botanical Garden, a perfect spot for a serene morning stroll. Next, dive into the rich tapestry of Native American culture at the Heard Museum, followed by a visit to the Phoenix Art Museum for a dose of artistic inspiration. In the afternoon, indulge in a shopping spree at my boutique, The Vault on Central, where you’ll find unique fashion pieces crafted by local designers such as myself. Let’s not forget to explore some local thrift stores for hidden gems! Wrap up the day with a delicious dinner at Call Her Martina, where the Latin food is simply irresistible.

In reflecting on my journey as a creative artist, I am profoundly grateful for the unwavering support of my family and friends. Their encouragement has been instrumental in my growth and success. Each achievement is a testament to their belief in my potential and their constant support. I extend my deepest gratitude to those who have stood by me, providing the strength and inspiration needed to reach new heights. This success is a shared triumph, and I am honored to have such a remarkable support system.
