Meet Kat Tomasewski | Blogger & Freelance Writer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kat Tomasewski and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kat, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
It is my hope that the personal experiences I share on the blog, Mom on the go in Holy Toledo will influence, encourage, and inspire others. Whether it be to travel, explore the local surroundings, get more involved in the community, or speak up for themselves and others when injustice occurs.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My career is a work in progress. I have a BS and MS, with my focus being on sustainable and green environmental design. I worked outside of the home and then taught classes to college students online. When my 3rd child was born trying to juggle multiple online courses and kids became too much so I fully immersed myself in motherhood and I am glad I did, I started a local playgroup, hosted events, moms’ night outs, etc. then my children started school and I missed my connection with my community. It was then that I decided to start a blog. Eleven years later and here I am still blogging and freelance writing. Now, it definitely doesn’t pay any bills, it’s more of a hobby, but it also is therapeutic for me, I enjoy sharing my personal experiences, my travels, and my life, and in return find much joy in hearing from followers.
I am also in the process of becoming a certified teacher…

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The ideal week would be hitting up all the local hot spots, the Toledo Museum of Art, perhaps having a glass of wine at the Glass Pavilion and enjoying a glass blowing demonstration. Pack a picnic and enjoy the view of the river downtown at Promenade Park, then go ziplining at the Toledo Zoo. Catch a Mud Hens baseball game then dinner and drinks at The Heights and enjoy the gorgeous view of the city from the rooftop. Enjoy a Broadway performance at the Stranahan Theatre. The next day we’d go Axe throwing at Axe419 and finish off the week with a sunset cruise down the river, viewing the largest mural in the US (Glass City River Walk), and dinner at Mancy’s Steakhouse. There is so much to do in Toledo, these barely scrape the surface, in fact, I share 101 fun things to do over on the blog.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for my net. My life leading up to March 2021 was like a circus sideshow, the highwire act, the one that’s 66 feet up. I was the performer riding the bicycle while simultaneously juggling all the “things” in life, carefully trying not to drop one while also attempting to keep my balance. I volunteered for everything, I was “that” mom, on the PTA board, taught religious education classes, served meals at the local family shelter, etc. I was the person that helped other people, I juggled all the “things”, and I was the one that everyone asked, “how do you do it all?”. To the outside world, it looked perfect, I had the 3 kids, was married for 18 years, had a house, a dog, etc., and most importantly I was the person people came to for help, I never needed help. That is until March of 2021 when all the things came crashing down, I lost my balance and thankfully landed in my net. There was emotional abuse that festered in my relationship and it led to financial abuse, one day I had access to my joint accounts with my husband, and the next he removed all the money from our accounts together, placed all of our money in his own account and turned off my phone. It was then that I had to put any shame and pride aside and I was forced to be the one to ask for help. My community, my family, friends, neighbors, PTA board, etc. were my safety net, when it initially happened they helped by providing gift cards, and meals, and then as time went on and I had a long-term subbing position at the local school district they helped with child care before school, helped get kids to school, and child care after school. And I must admit, though that was the toughest year of my life, ultimately ending with me being served divorce papers, it was also the most impactful year of growth I think I’ve ever had. It wasn’t until I let go of having to impress others that I finally became honest with myself and was able to be my authentic self around others, and let me tell you, being able to be yourself in life feels AMAZING!!! Thus, I need to thank my net that caught me, my family, friends, neighbors, etc. who caught me when I fell from my sideshow in life and helped me get back on my feet, and even held my hand as I became more comfortable with being my authentic self.
