We had the good fortune of connecting with Kate Wilkinson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kate, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Simply put- I was attracted to the independence the hair industry provides. I worked odd jobs before attending cosmetology school 11 years ago and quickly realized I didn’t enjoy working under others, or for someone else’s success. I knew that I’d eventually be entirely on my own, though there was much work to be done before that was achieved. I now have complete creative control within my environment and craft as a whole.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
In the beginning I had no concept of what set me apart from others, or where my artistic direction with Hair was going. As a new artist I had to learn through trial and error, though that was along time ago. Now days the resources for education are endless it’s easier to stay inspired. At this point I’ve been able to focus in on specific techniques that allow me to keep up with this ever evolving industry. I have now found my niche within Hair Extensions and natural hair color results. I strive to perfect these.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m lucky enough to live In the beautiful mountains of Prescott Arizona. Which offers lots of outdoor activities. I would definitely spend some time going on one of the many hiking trails, and hit Watson Lake for kayaking. The downtown square area offers lots of shopping with one of a kind antique stores, and boutiques to browse. One of my favorite restaurants to go to is Farm provisions which has great organic and often locally grown foods used in their menu. My favorite coffee shop to go to is The Porch its has such a relaxing homie vibe, and amazing coffee! On Saturdays I make sure to hit the farmers market they have a nice selection of local vendors and fun activities.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
In the beginning of my career I was my own worst enemy. I doubted my capabilities as an Entrepreneur and created my own barriers. Though, I come from a large & closely connected family who wouldn’t let me stay within the small boundaries I set for myself. They’ve showed up emotionally, physically, and as loyal patrons To my business which allowed me to build my confidence in the baby stages of my business to get it to where it is today.
