We had the good fortune of connecting with Katherine Todd and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Katherine, how do you define success?
I like to think of success as being happy with where I am at in life and excited about where I am going. It is striking a balance between financial success and time. I don’t need to be wealthy to be successful. I want to be rich in time, happiness, and joy, and live true to my values.

I get happiness and joy in my life through connecting with nature, cherishing the time I get with my kids, and enjoying community connections. Owning my own business allows me to navigate the balance of work and time to suit my needs. I am a homeschooling mom to two boys and being present for them is a huge part of how I run my business. They come with me to markets, they help with deliveries, and we truly run our business as a family.

My husband is an integral part of our business as well. We have a vision for our lives and our family and we work together towards that. We also take the time to be grateful for where we are at. Two years ago this business was just an idea in my mind. Now, it is a huge part of our lives and we are incredibly grateful for that. We love the work we do because we help people with natural wellness tools and we get to create community of like minded people. It is very gratifying. We feel successful now and excited about the future.

What should our readers know about your business?
I decided to launched Prickly Paradise Elderberry early in 2020. We are a wild foraging, nature loving family that loves our home in the Sonoran Desert. A love of plants and connection with nature has always been a big part of my life. I got introduced to elderberry from my grandmother when she came to visit one year. My young boys were always getting sick and she suggested we try it to support their immune system. I couldn’t believe how well it worked and I soon went to work figuring out how to make my own recipe with better ingredients. I began sharing with friends and family and people kept asking for more. We’re incredibly grateful for the growth we’ve experienced in the last two years.

I’m proud of the fact that we are a local business that keeps our operations local and only uses the highest quality ingredients. As a small business, we don’t have shareholders, big distributions chains, and huge overhead. We can keep our prices fair and our quality high because of that. We’re proud to offer a quality of product you can’t find from a big brand.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I had a chance to show my best friend around Tucson there are a few special places I would go. We would go for dinner and shopping at the MSA Annex. My favorite Japanese place, Kukai is a great start and we would eat in their open air patio and enjoy the scenery.

We’d have to grab breakfast at Coyote Paws on the west side on our way to the Arizona-Sonoran Desert Museum. On the way back, we would stop at Tucson Gem and Mineral World and check out their quirky and cool collection of gems and fossils.

I’d take a picnic up to Sabino Canyon and spend the day hiking around, maybe even taking the tram.

I would also make sure to drive up to Mt. Lemmon and hike Bear Gulch or hang out at my favorite picnic spot, Middle Bear. We’d go on a plant walk and look at the unique plants of the Sky Islands. There are so many neat places to explore in Tucson, this would just be a good start.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I owe much of my success in this business to the loving support of two people: my husband and business partner and my mom. My husband had doubts in the beginning when the road was rocky and he wasn’t sure of the road map of starting a business, but he has come around to be a great business partner. He does so much behind the scenes work and really invests lots of time and energy into making things run smoothly. I am so happy to have him by my side.

My mom has also been a huge support and provided lots of encouragement. She is a fabulous cook, so she tests each and every one of my recipes and products. She is also a great sales person and does a fabulous job helping out at events when we need an extra hand. I am so grateful to have her.
