Meet Kathy Kim | Creator of Kathy’s Kitchening

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kathy Kim and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kathy, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I was extremely lucky and starting my own business really found its way to me. Just like many people during the pandemic lockdown, my personal Instagram account was quickly dominated by posts of the food and baked goods I was making at home. Thinking it was becoming too much of a food blog, I created a separate account to share all the cooking and baking I was doing – and this was essentially the beginning of ‘Kathy’s Kitchening’. Then shortly after, I started receiving direct messages asking if I took orders of the cakes I had made for friends. Although I always dreamed of starting my own business, it remained a ‘dream’ because I was just too scared. It was really those direct messages from locals that encouraged me to take ‘Kathy’s Kitchening’ to the next level and make my dream a reality.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Through Kathy’s Kitchening, it has been very exciting to be able to share Korean-style baked goods with Tucson, like chiffon cup/cakes and unique gourmet cookies. I also take pride in offering cupcakes and cakes with intricate floral and succulent designs – all individually hand-piped and decorated. I hope to continue to expand the options in terms of flavors and designs that are unique and local.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Kathy’s Kitchening went from #lockdownbaking to #tucsonbaker all thanks to the support from the local community. Thank you, Tucson! Thank you for your trust and for allowing me to be part of your special day through my sweet creations! I’d also like to thank local businesses Blessed Grounds and The Korean Rose for their partnership. And lastly, a special shoutout to my husband for his continued encouragement and support throughout this journey, and of course, for helping out with all the dishes!
